A recent report from analysts Directions on Microsoft ponders the top 5 things MS got right during the first 30 years along with some lessons learned (see the link above for the take-aways):

  • Software Is King
  • Outsource Your Sales Force
  • Technology for the Masses
  • Developer, Developers, Developers!
  • The Long View

2-5 seem pretty obvious to me as someone who's worked at Microsoft for a number of years - they're very much part of the culture - but I probably took #1 for granted having been brought up (I suppose) as part of the "PC generation".

It's a short article, worthy of a read. I like the lesson "Business isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Be persistent." but would add (given the current state of the economy) "Just make sure your cashflow holds up".
