Gen Y's need for full IT rights
New research indicates that more IT professionals are demanding full administrative rights and for other non-IT employees’ privileges to be cut. Sound familiar? If not, it ought to be. Your organisation’s security could depend on it.
Research undertaken by Avecto found that Generation Y workers are the most likely to demand increased administrative rights when it comes to network usage, indicating that there is a clear difference when it comes to privilege management within an enterprise. Frustratingly, this is giving way to an alarming increase in malware and network infections – paving the way for disruptions in businesses and unexpected IT costs.
Nearly 40% of IT professionals are reporting malware form unauthorised applications being downloaded on their network. Unsurprisingly, in 80% of those surveyed, male employees between the ages of 20 and 35 are the most likely to demand full administrator rights and download these unauthorised applications. These are the guys that are more prone to Take risks, cause problems and increase the likelihood of IT problems.
Worryingly, IT departments are feeling the mounting pressure from these younger, allegidly tech-savvy employees to grant them access. More than 50% of respondents would expect a decrease in support calls, and affiliated costs, as a direct result of not allowing it. It is a catch 22 for IT professionals.
Creating workloads may not be on every IT professional’s agenda, but creating better security by insisting on limited access will ultimately save a great deal worth of work.
Paul Kenyon, Avecto co-founder and COO, says it best: “It’s more important than ever for organisations to have a solution in place that enables quick and secure removal of admin rights from users and the ability to deploy policies that elevate all of the all legitimate business applications that require privileged access using privilege management technology.”
Continue running Windows desktops with full administrator rights and it will put the organisation at unnecessary risk. Make sure you’re covered and allow IT professionals to do their job.
