Commerce Server 2007 Starter Site CTP

The Commerce Server team is pleased to announce that a Technology Preview of the Commerce Server 2007 Starter Site is now available. This release is designed to provide our community with a guideline for building a front-end website for Commerce Server 2007. The release includes an installation guide and readme, but does not include full documentation. The CS2007 Starter Site CTP is NOT FOR PRODUCTION USAGE, and is not supported by Microsoft. This release is to allow our customers an early technology preview to learn more about how to deploy Commerce Server 2007, and provide feedback to the product group about the technology.

The final release of the Starter Site is scheduled for later this year. The final release will also include the final, full documentation, along with any requisite updates to the Installation Guide and Readme. For customers who wish to go live with the Starter Site, it is imperative that they use the final version, not the CTP release.

    Great work!
    But.. you say,
"The release includes an installation guide and readme, but does not include full documentation".. well, there is no documentation nor a readme. At least the version I downloadad today.
It has Commerce Server 2007 Starter Site Readme.htm that has only a link to the documentation (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=71818) that does not exist.
There is also a Commerce Server 2007 Starter Site Pre-Release License Terms.txt.

    Hello,

I have the same error when I try to import the sample data. Here is my command: SampleDataImprt.exe c:inetpubStarterSiteStarterSite
where the first Startersite is the site path and the second StarterSite is the path of virtual directory [Max Akbar] What's your computer name also did you follow the instruction on the readme to set appropriate security permission?

Here are somethings that might help you:

Open IE and hit all Site Applicatons (Starter Site home page, Catalog WebService, Marketing WebService etc...) Make sure that you can display the pages and that you have no errors. If you have errors check the eventlog and walk through the setup doc  http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=71818 to make sure all is set right.

    Good luck,
    -Max

You will need to install SSL certificate. You can get one by downloading the IIS resource kit and it has a tool for self cert. link to IIS resource kit: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=56FC92EE-A71A-4C73-B628-ADE629C89499&displaylang=en Good luck, -Max

First make sure to hit this url: http://localhost/CatalogWebService/CatalogWebService.asmx If you still get an error then you missed a step in configurating your WebService. Read the Post-Configuration Procedures http://download.microsoft.com/download/3/a/4/3a46267f-9640-4623-86a1-c63bbfea9e1d/Installation%20and%20Configuration%20Guide%20for%20Microsoft%20Commerce%20Server%202007.html#Post_Configuration Also Read these topics: Authorizing Users and Groups to Access Web Services http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/CS07Default/html/25c94e07-eb83-4add-b965-f990f134a14a.asp Granting Access to the Commerce Server Databases http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/en-us/CS07Default/html/5d8e6bf3-ca99-479c-a970-62736232d8ea.asp Working with Application Pools and Web Applications http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/shared/deeptree/asp/deeptree.asp?stcfg=/library/searchtabconfig.xml&dtcfg=/library/deeptreeconfig.xml&url=/library/en-us/CS07Default/html/02afcee1-5546-4acc-b053-2aa6d7762bd3.asp?frame=true Good luck, -Max

I follow the starter site Installation guide to unpack the site. However when I go to http://localhost/CatalogWebService/CatalogWebService.asmx, amessage "Service unavalible" came out. I also cannot use Sampledataimport.exe C:InetpubwwwrootStarterSite command to import data to catalog. I have read the above entry of your blog about someting "missing a step - Add Worker Process Accounts to the IIS_WPG group" do it cause the error? And do you know the solution? Thanks

"I unpack the Starter site. click the login or My account. Then I got "The page cannot be displayed". Any one knows the solution? Thanks" I have same problem. I had install server sertificate for ssl, but I am stil not able to access login or My Account page. Howe I can this resolve?

Check your IIS setting to make sure that you have ASP.NET enabled next check to make sure that the .NET runtime is set for version 2.0. Check to make sure that you have your SSL setup correctly see my post here http://blogs.msdn.com/maxakbar/pages/using-selfssl-with-commerce-server-2007.aspx. If none of this helps create a simple HTML page and see if you can browse it. If it works then you have issues enabling ASP.NET with IIS else you need to call PSS for help. Good luck, -Max

One more issue (I hope)...Now that I have the sample data imported, the site seems functional, until I try to browse to either the products or the login feature.  When I try to navigate to the products page, IE says that it cannot find it.  With the login, there is just an error.  Any more ideas???  Thanks.

This is the error that I get when trying to access the MyAccount link: Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.  This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

For whatever reason it seem that the Starter Site directory in IIS is not a Virtual Directory. You will need to make the Starter Site directory under IIS a VDir. -Max

    January 02, 2007
Do you know how I can fix this?  I created a new website in IIS and unpacked the startersite to that location.  The homepage works, so I am not sure how the StarterSite in IIS is not a Virtual Directory.

Max, Anyone, I successfully installed the StarterSite, it was quite easy except for the assignment of rights. But there is one problem. I was able to access all pages except for the Products page. The folder /StarterSite/Products wasn't extracted when the StarterSite was unpacked. I believe it contains the details of the sample products. I used PUP Viewer and looked at the content of Starter.pup. The /StarterSite/Products folder isn't there. Is this really incomplete or it should come from somewhere else? A little help ^_^ ... Thanks!

There is no product folder. The Starter Site uses a URL rewriting module to help search engines. Did you run the import data tool? What is the actual error? -Max

  • Anonymous
    February 05, 2007
I assumed that there is a Products folder because of the link (Products) in the main page leading to a "resource cannot be found" error. I did run the import data tool and it was successful, although I am not sure if it really did because I didn't have anything to check it with. The actual error is this: Server Error in '/' Application.

The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.  Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. Requested URL: /StarterSite/Products/Default.aspx

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.210

http://localhost/StarterSite/Products/Adventure+Works+Catalog/PID-AW099-15.aspx that is one of the links generated by StarterSite. Again, that folder doesn't exist. If I may ask, how is that folder created? Thanks again.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood this note. The new IIS Web site must use a port number other than the default port number 80. For example, use port number 8080. On the local computer, when accessing the Web services, the URL to specify should be something like http://localhost:8080/CatalogWebService/CatalogWebService.asmx. I can access everything already. Thanks for your help. =)

Max, Anyone, Hi! I have another question, why is the startersite working when the web services are down? I tried to stop all the application pools except for the starter site and when I tried to access the site, i can still make orders and other stuff. Does this mean that the Starter Site is not dependent on those web services? If so, what are those for? Thanks.

  • Anonymous
    February 07, 2007
That's correct the StarterSit does not depend on the web services. The web services are used when you launch the Management UI or BizTalk Adapters. -Max

Matt T.  - You could actually also be having a permissions issue with your productcatalog database.  I got the same error that you got and the event viewer showed me aexactly whihc proc didn't have permissions is was the get database schema version proc.  Anyway, the quickest way to reolve this (if you have the same issue) is to doubble check all of the SQL roles for your ssCatalogWebServiceUser.

Nevermind, i found the answer on another website.  Change the builder.port = your port number.  Here is the link. http://blogs.msdn.com/commerce/archive/2006/12/28/starter-site-on-a-non-standard-port.aspx

I m having problem using sampledataimport.exe which i have solved throug ms hotfix (kb number 920867)..but after solving that one i m stucked again with warnings that come during running sampledataimport at the time of Importing 1. Catalog and 2. Inventory catalog which tells me: Access is denied. <Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070005 <E_ACCESSDENIED>> (Yellow colour) which causes not to import products in my starter site. Can I get help on this? Thanks for this..

You can manually import the Catalog and Inventory data. When you extracted the Stater Stie into a temp folder in there you should find AdvWorksCatalog.xml and AdvWorksInventoryCatalog.xml. Good luck, -Max

I have installed the Startersite and imported the sample data. When I try to browse the site, i get the following error : "The module 'CommerceDataWarehouseAuthenticationModule' depends on the site resource 'Site CS Authentication' which does not exist in the Commerce Server administration database.". Any pointers??

  • Anonymous
    May 10, 2008
if you get this error then it means that you have not unpacked the 'Site CS Authentication' resource. You need to open the Commerce Server Manager then navigate to your site. From there right click on resources and select New then Add Recource. Next point to your pup file and only select 'CS Authentication'. Your other option is to remove the 'CommerceDataWarehouseAuthenticationModule' module. -Max

Max, Thanks for the solution. I added the 'CS Authentication' resource and it works fine. Now the site is working fine except when i click Login or myaccount tab , it gives 'The page cannot be displayed'. I have also installed the ssl certificate from the IIS resource kit. Stil it gives the same error. Any pointers??

  • Anonymous

You need to add an ssl certificate. You can donwlaod the IIS resource kit and use the selfssl. You could also remove the ssl checks, I think there are two places web.config and checkout page. I think this was documented on the Commerce Server blog. -Max
