The Search Wars...
Ok, I admit it. I use Google for my web searches.
I've tried to be a good corporate citizen and use www.live.com (and sometimes I still do). but let's be honest, I don't get the results I want.
It's frustrating, particularly as an MS employee. Though it is popular to say that Microsoft is finished (or even dead), I am not sure that is the case.
Today, I saw a preview of the next version of Live Search...and I'll say this.
Remember, back in the 90's when Netscape was the man and everyone said that it was over for MS? Well, I'm not saying we'll have a repeat of that at all, but what I am saying is that, I don't think the fight is over yet.
First off, if you are using a Vista PC, there's no question that the built in search is 1st rate (better than Google Desktop).
Next, step out, your corporate Intranet. It used to be that I would go to our main page, search for something and...get back garbage. Now, on SharePoint 2007, I get what I want. The first time I saw this, I was shocked, but it gave me hope. The result was relevant, very relevant.
My suggestion: Ask your customers about their enterprise search plans...and educate yourself about the MS offerings. The game is NOT over and you can add a lot of value into the conversation.
