Tech Support for Vista and Office 2007 will cost you

Microsoft has raised charges substantially to retail customers for tech support for Vista and Office 2007, and reduced help offered to users. As of Jan. 30, customers who buy full retail copies of Vista and Office 2007 will get unlimited calls, e-mails and Web chats with Microsoft tech support during the first 90 days after activation. But after that, contacting Microsoft for Vista help will cost $59 per incident, up from $35. Customers will pay $49 per incident for technical assistance with Office 2007, also up from $35.

Matt Fingerhut, GM of consumer support for platforms and business applications, said Microsoft realized that its support prices were lower than those charged by competitors like Best Buy's Geek Squad, CompUSA's TechPros, Circuit City's Firedog and others.

Microsoft will continue to help customers, at no charge, for any questions that arise from security or virus issues, as well as Windows Update / Microsoft Update. Issues with all other consumer software, such as Money, will still cost $35 per incident to diagnose and fix.
