Released: Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 RC0

The latest prerelease Windows SDK is available for download! This SDK release supports Windows Server 2008 RC0 and .NET Framework 3.5 Beta2 .

The RC0 SDK is compatible with Visual Studio 2005 SP1; including Visual Studio Express Editions . The new SDK includes the Visual Studio 2008 Beta2 versions of the C++ command line toolset and CRT for development on and for X86, X64 and IA64. (Learn more about the new VC++ version 9 compilers in the blog post Updated Windows SDK Visual C++ Cross Compilers .) Prerelease editions of the next version of Visual Studio are available from Visual Studio 2008 Beta2 and can also be used with this SDK.

This is a pre-release SDK and you will find issues. Read the Release Notes for a description of known issues and check my blog and the Windows SDK Team Blog for new workarounds. Have you found a problem that’s not documented? Post your questions and/or workarounds to the Windows SDK MSDN Forum .

This release of the SDK is an ISO-only download. For more tips on handling an ISO, read the Copying the contents of ISO files section of Troubleshooting SDK Download/Setup Problems .

To take advantage of new VS 2008 capabilities when building SDK samples please review the Release Notes about what steps are required to configure the SDK build environment. The .NET Framework documentation, samples, and tools align with .NET Framework 3.5 Beta2 , which you will need to download separately if you don’t have Visual Studio 2008 installed.

What’s new:

· The latest set of documentation, samples, and tools for Windows, including .NET Framework 3.5 development.

· New C++ compilers and associated CRT (the same compilers as in Visual Studio 2008).

· This SDK will install side-by-side with Visual Studio 2008 Beta2.

· More than 100 GUI and command-line tools, including .NET Framework 3.5 tools

Supported Operating Systems:Windows Server 2008 (code name “Longhorn”); Windows Server 2003; all versions of Windows Vista; Windows XP

Additional System Requirements:

· The .NET Framework 3.0 tools and samples are designed to work on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista without need of an additional download. If you installed this SDK on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003, you will need to install the .NET Framework 3.0 .

· The .NET Framework 3.5 Beta2 tools and samples require installation of the .NET Framework 3.5 Beta2, which is available with the Beta2 pre-release editions of Visual Studio 2008 Beta2 or a standalone install of the .NET Framework 3.5 Beta2 .

Install this SDK on a test machine (it is still in pre-release, after all) and let me know what you think .
