Netflix announces online movie viewing

It's official and posted on Netflix.  They now allow people to immediately watch movies and television series on their personal computers. The feature is included in subscribers' monthly membership at no extra charge and will have a phased roll-out over next six months.

Netflix is using real-time playback technology so a video is viewed at virtually the same time it is delivered to a user's computer. A one-time, one-minute installation of a browser applet and movie can begin playing in your Web browser in just a few seconds.

Hacking Netflix  has in-depth coverage of all the details, but in a nutshell subscribers get 1 hour of instant watching for each dollar they spend on Netflix for their monthly plan.  Subscribers on Netflix's most popular plan, $17.99 for unlimited DVD rental and three discs out at a time, will have 18 hours of online movie watching per month.
