Feed icons

So, a little while ago, Jane Kim, who works with me on the IE RSS team, posted to the RSS team blog about the feed icon we'd be adopting in IE7. Shortly afterward, Michael Affronti from the Outlook 12 team posted that they'd be adopting the same icon.

I wasn't sure what the response would be -- though, I suspected it'd be pretty positive. Well, we got slashdotted (twice), interviewed by the Seattle P-I, and written about on every news site from Forbes (thanks for taking the most anti-Microsoft stance possible, btw :) to Mary-Jo Foley. All for an icon.

This, however, is the best yet. Matt Brett has set up https://www.feedicons.com, where you can get copies of the icon in any format you want.

Oh, and if you'd like to update your Mac OS X Safari, the folks at macspecialist.com have created a tool to let you do that.

Awesome. :)

Really all the attention to the icon is kind of silly and overblown. I do think that most users are smart enough that if there were different icons in different browsers, they would figure it out (as they do for the other 50 icons each browser has). Really, everyone is just excited because Microsoft "gave in" or "learned from" the open source folks...which is also kind of silly and overblown.
