hurricane katrina

I just want to add my voice to those offering heartfealt sorrow for everyone who was victimized by Hurricane Katrina or its aftermath. Sometimes the world of software seems very trivial next to real-life tragedy.

Lets hope people learn not to build a city that is lower then sea level in the future.

That's true. But how can we stop a civilization from happening, especially, when there are reasons for that to happen? Gulf coast has been a critical juncture for sea-based trade, off-shore drilling, and many more activities. Maybe, humanity will again be triumphant and build ever strong barriers and even change the course of nature. After all, we built dams, we perished eco-systems, we transplanted living organs, we razed forests, and we are even conquering cosmos.

I think it's a great tribute to human ingenuity that a city below sea level was able to be built and thrive for as long as New Orleans. Like the canals of Venice, N.O. was a great achievement that shows the power of science to control nature. Of course, nature is a cruel mistress and we saw that last week. I agree with Gupta that humanity can again be triumphant.
