We have a new product name, and it's...

…worth more than my job to tell you what it is. You’re going to have to wait until MMS 2005 to find out, on orders from marketing. Unless of course marketing decide to leak it to a select journalist or two in advance, in which case I’ll blog about its publication with a suitably non-denial denial.

What I will tell you is that it’s a very worthy name. Staid, you might say. Boring, even. In short, it’s a Type 2 Microsoft Name. And although it is verbable it’s unfortunately not a great verb. I mean, it’s not as bad as “WUS” but it’s no great shakes in the “boy, that makes me feel good about the product” department. Let’s just say that the Exchange team’s motto of “The Most Feared And Loathed Group In Microsoft” could be up for grabs, and leave it at that for the next three weeks.

Oh, and a big thankyou to nat for reading this on crazyapplerumors and thinking of me…

Undead Focus Group Picks Names For Microsoft Technologies

In a surprisingly unstartling revelation, sources at Microsoft confirmed today that the company uses zombies to help pick the names for its technologies.

Most recently used to pick the name "Windows XP Home Edition N" as part of a naming agreement with the European Commission, sources say zombies are excellent at picking dull and uninteresting names that are difficult to pin down.

Mmmm, braaaaaiiiiiiinnssss

I think the EU itself picked out the name (Windows XP Home Edition N), and MS simply agreed to it. So for this case at least, the name was indeed picked by zombies.
