Surface Pro pricing and availability announced

Yours truly has been using Windows 8 on a Samsung Series 7 slate since May 2012, and it’s been my main machine the whole time. I do all of my productivity work on it, including code authoring with Visual Studio. I haven’t used a mouse in any serious way since May; touch and stylus are an addictive combination.

Ever since Microsoft announced the Surface, I’ve been waiting eagerly for the Pro model to arrive. It’s almost here. Panos Panay, General Manager of Microsoft Surface, has announced pricing and availability details.

Available: January 2013
64GB standalone version: $899
128GB standalone version: $999

    I too had been waiting for it in hope.  A Surface with PC specs and capabilities was really appealing but now it's revealed the memory is really low, there's no gigabit Ethernet (if it's meant to be a PC, why not, is there a dock connector with network capabilities?!??), no discrete graphics and just the one usb port. I don't think it would be able to replace my old laptop (has more ports, more memory, 3d accelerator, more storage and the all important gigabit for transferring VM's and such).  My desktops at home and at work are way more powerful so it can't act as my main machine. It would be a nice replacement for my existing cheapo android tablet but I hardly use that currently and I'd lose 3g support when I do use it. But I still want it...!  Why couldn't you guys fit it with a show-stopping feature so I can justify it to myself or replace something with it?? :)

    Simon, I'm sure it all has to do with battery life.  gigabit ethernet, discrete video card and more ports mean less battery life.  I'm interested but I will check it out before spending a grand. I'm a bit surprised that MS isn't pushing Surface development on MSDN.  MS, copy Apple's marketing....
