SYSK 171: MSDE Will Not Be Supported on Vista
Yes, it is true – Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) will not be supported on Windows Vista. So, if you’re using MSDE in your applications, consider migrating to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Express) at the earliest opportunity. You can download SQL Express free of charge at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express/default.mspx.

Hmm, so I guess the product support life-cycle for SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine of main stream support until 08/04/2008 and extended support until 09/04/2013 is wrong... - Anonymous

The Microsoft standard product support life-cycle still applies, i.e. MSDE will be supported as you have stated on Windows XP, etc., but it does not include support on new environments, such as Vista. - Anonymous

...except the standard product support life-cycle includes interaction between supported products and supported operating-systems.
This is a deviation from the standard product life-cycle and a change to the existing MSDE support terms--from which people have based their development, deployment, and rollout plans. - Anonymous
