A Developer’s Brief Introduction To Network Administration (part 1)

Dave McMahon wrote a brief guide, but it's still a long post so we've divided it up. The first part is now available. Part 2 will follow next week.

In his own words:

Dave McMahon (MVP, MCDBA, MCAD) has been involved with computers since college days back in 1977, and kept his hand in during University and through 11 years in the Royal Air Force and another 4 years in the Retail industry until entering the IT industry full time in 1997. He has worked with Access 2.0 VBA through to Access 97 VBA, VB5, VB6 and all versions of VB.NET from the original Beta1. Dave is a Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) having started with version 7.0 he worked with SQL 2000, Oracle 9i, Oracle 10g he is now working with SQL Server 2005. He is also a Microsoft Certified Application Developer (MCAD) and has been awarded MVP for Connected Systems Development. He is co-founder of the Next Generation User Group http://www.nxtgenug.net based in the Midlands and has a passion for any IT but specifically for XML based technologies such as XML, XML Schema and particularly XSLT and their interaction with SQL Server.
Dave works as Chief Architect for .NET Development at Ridgian Limited, a privately owned software house based in Central Birmingham. Ridgian are a Microsoft Certified Partner and specialize in Business Intelligence Solutions and Custom Software Solutions. He is very active in the Microsoft community speaking at DeveloperDeveloperDeveloper events, and at numerous User Group meetings around the country. He is due to speak at TechEd Barcelona in November 2006 with Next Generation User Group co-founder Richard Costall. He has had a series of articles published on SQL Server 2005 Security in International Developer Magazine.

In addition to his developer role at Ridgian, Dave has also filled the role of Network Administrator for the company for the past 4 years.

Dave has been married to Sandra ‘the perfect partner’ for 15 years and has two crazy youngsters Chris (12) and John (7). When not working with IT (which doesn’t happen often …), Dave plays guitar and every now and then takes to walking and scrambling in the mountains of Scotland.

    Great Article - As a web developer  gave me a better understanding of what the Network guys have to cope with.
