Building RIA Event slides + source code + resources

VSBanner

Thanks to Ravi Nar and the Vista Squad folks for participating yesterday at the Building RIA for Desktop, Web & Mobile using Silverlight & WPF   session in London. I really enjoyed presenting with you and answering your questions (it’s been a while since I had so many questions in such a short timeframe smile_omg)…and talk with .NET, LINQ, Mobile, ASP.NET…as well as Python and Flash developers.

As promised, you can download here the slides from the presentation. A video of the session, thanks to Ian, will be available on the Vista Squad videos repository.

I’d like to give here a few links as follow-up to the presentation:

1) WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation)

WPF is a next-generation presentation system for building Windows client applications with visually stunning user experiences. With WPF, you can create a wide range of both standalone and browser-hosted applications.

Interesting links:

I’ll publish the source code for some of the demo you’ve seen yesterday in the next post.

2) Silverlight

Microsoft Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform, and cross-device plug-in for delivering the next generation of .NET based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. (Luckily you all already knew the definition smile_nerd)

Interesting links:

Again, I’ll publish in the next days the source code for the demo you’ve seen yesterday.

3) Silverlight for Mobile

Bringing Silverlight to devices expands the reach that developers and designers have when creating rich Internet applications. This enables them to easily leverage content, assets, and code that they are using today for browser-based Silverlight applications. Support for Silverlight on devices will quickly help change the landscape for the types of user experiences consumers can expect from their phones by bridging rich interactivity, wireless data, media and more.

Interesting links:

Feel free to ask me questions or to send me feedbacks, by commenting this post. Thanks again to everybody, I’m looking forward to meeting you again soon smile_wink

PS: just as a reminder, Forza Italia! soccerball

Hi Giorgio Do you have a link to that cool future UX video you showed at the start of the evening, or is that an internal only thing? Cheers mate, thanks for a great talk!

Is there the slightest chance that the first answer on the Silverlight for Mobile FAQ (the one that says the CTP will be available in the second quarter of CY 2008) will turn out to be true? Because the last week of the second quarter of 2008 is fast approaching, and it's getting hard to maintain interest in something that doesn't actually exist. Don't get me wrong, I'm enthusiastic about it and keen for it to succeed, but you're not giving us anything to work with, and failure to deliver actual bits doesn't exactly inspire optimism.

Hi Kevin, thank you for your interest (here and around...;) for SLM :) As written on silverlight.net, we will release a public CTP by the end of the year...to let you folks start working with this great framework :) You can expect more Silverlight for Mobile sessions at PDC ;) Ciao! G.

Thanks for the information, I have 2 more questions on Silverlight for mobile: Will Silverlight 2 be available on mobile (eventually)? Will Silverlight be available on all mobile devices (like it's available on all desktop computers: PC, Linux, MAC)?

  1. Altought we haven't announced any date yet, the Silverlight for Mobile will reflect Silverlight for Desktop...so...yes, SL2 will be supported in the future on mobile devices
  2. At the beginning it will be supported by WM and some Nokia device. In the long term, we will work on extending the support to more devices/platform :-) G.

Thanks for the info...someone definitely needs to update the FAQ at http://silverlight.net/learn/mobile.aspx, since "by the end of the year" and "2nd Quarter of CY 2008" mean very different things. (I seem to recall at one point the first CTP of Silverlight 2 for mobile was being predicted for the end of the year or thereabouts...while admittedly that's the most promising version, I was looking forward to anything). I do think we'll need more than demos soon to distract people from the siren song of that iPhone SDK...(even though Objective-C is sick and twisted).

As I said in the previous post , .NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 addresses issues that were found through a combination

Hello, Giorgio the Devigner (I'm going to use that word all the time now lol).. that was a really cool demo. I've been following Silverlight since the early 1.0 and I am quite good at it, I would call myself one of the very early adopters. In fact, we're already done rewriting our internal tools in SL2 B2! Soooooo... regarding silverlight mobile, I'm kind of confused here. What I gather is that if I wanted to do a silverlight 1.0 mobile app today ... No need for golive, just something to play with... well, I can't? Is there an SDK / plugin I can install on my Mobile 6 device? A secret beta I can take part of? A... super secret FTP I could get the files from? Or maybe... An evengelist recruitment program with special access to this stuff??? Anything... At all.. Please :) Alex G
