PDC Overview
On Monday (October 27), the Professional Developers Conference (PDC) formally begins in Los Angeles. The PDC is the definitive Microsoft event for software developers and strategic architects focused on the future of the Microsoft platform. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions around upcoming technologies and the future direction of the Microsoft platform. The event is sold out, with more than 160 technical sessions and four keynotes from top Microsoft executives. More than 250 media influentials are registered to attend, spanning top trade and business publications, wires, key blogs and leading analyst firms from around the world.
With the computing industry in the midst of a services transformation, PDC08 will offer the industry a peek at how Microsoft is delivering on its software plus services vision at the platform level with the first public unveiling of the Windows Azure™ and the Azure™ Services Platform, along with first looks at the next version of Windows (Windows 7) and Office web applications, lightweight versions of Office programs delivered through the browser. The key to Microsoft’s ability to lead in the next era of computing is rooted firmly in the broad ecosystem of Microsoft developers. At the PDC we will arm them with the early preview bits and information they need to prepare for the next generation of application development. The main thrust of this year’s event will center on Microsoft’s ability to deliver against its software plus services vision and strategy.

Day 1 (October 27)
· The Azure™ Services Platform: A set of cloud-based technologies such as storage, identity, and multi-device sync that extend software development for both enterprise server and PC/browser/phone applications with services on the Web.
· Windows Azure™ : A component of the Azure Services Platform that extends the Windows environment to the cloud for developers who want service hosting, scalable storage, and automated service management of their software applications.
Day 2 (October 28)
· Windows 7: First view and feature disclosure of the next release of Windows – extending developers’ investments in Windows Vista to encourage the creation of new applications and services that span the PC, services, and devices.
· Office Web applications: As part of the next release of Office, Microsoft will provide Office Web applications, which are light weight versions of Office programs, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote, delivered through a browser, enabling viewing, editing and collaboration on Office documents from PC’s, phones and browsers.
· Live Services (Live Services, the Live Framework & Live Mesh): A set of building blocks within the Azure Services Platform for handling user data and application resources. Live Services include Mesh technologies for synchronizing data and extending web applications across multiple devices, as well as Live Framework, a uniform way for programming Live Services from a variety of platforms, programming languages, applications and devices.
Day 3 (October 29)
· Robotics CCR and DDS Toolkit 2008: Microsoft’s Concurrency and Coordination Runtime and Decentralized Software Services (CCR and DSS) Toolkit 2008 is a set of .NET and Compact Framework class libraries and tools, which provides new technologies for building loosely-coupled, highly concurrent and distributed applications.
