Forget all your MP3 Players...
Hi...
last weekend I was with my parents and as usual my mother wanted to get rid of old things of mine. She showed what she called "an old music player of mine but since I certainly have a new one..."
Well, this is an original Sony Walkman WM-31. It has a connector for an external power supply, a switch to choose the tape material (Normal or CrO2/Metal) and was manufactured in Japan (good old times when the Japanese did to our electronics industry what the Chinese now do to the Japanese...). My sister had the bigger version with a radio in it, hey, but mine is "pure"...
The cassette has some strange kind of reggae music (never knew I had something like that).
The whole day now I was wondering how "large" the storage on this device is. I mean it can carry about 2*45 minutes of music. In CD quality this would result in something around 650 to 700 Mb. Since the dynamic of a tape is not comparable to that one of a CD it will be pretty much less than that. So 650 Mb is the higher barrier, that's for sure. Maybe the whole scenario is wrong because the music is stored analog which introduces some side effects (for example there are CD players on the market using tube amplifiers because of the smooth sound).
My C64 had a cassette drive, too, but I cannot remember how many bytes that had...
Anyway, I have my stylish used-vintage look ;-) Maybe I should rip off all the interior, build in a MP3 player, just leave the motor and the cassette in (so it looks like being the real thing) ...
