Subject: GotDotNetArchive - Saving GotDotNetHi Frank,
Like many people, today I leaned that Microsoft will be phasing out the GotDotNet site by June 19th 2007. This concerned me for a number of reasons:
- A large number of search results still appear to land on the GotDotNet site, even when projects have already been transferred to CodePlex. These landing pages at least serve as a redirection to the correct site – without this, many of these search results would be lost.
- Similarly, many older blog entries, other sites and even books would still redirect to GotDotNet pages.
- A number of projects that have been “abandoned” by their authors, and yet still provide valuable tools and information, won’t be moved across to sites like CodePlex – these resources would effectively be lost from the community.
As someone who’s written a number of .NET articles and given a number of .NET presentations, I’d hate to see these valuable resources go to waste.
So, I’d like to propose “GotDotNetArchive”, a community funded project with the goal being to keep the links and resources alive by providing static versions of the existing pages, so that developers can still access these resources. It would essentially be a read-only static archive of the original site.
The involvement I would ask from Microsoft would be:
- Permission to copy all of the public workspace-related information on the site.
- Redirection (or a transfer) of the GotDotNet domain to the community archive site, so the existing URL’s can still be resolved.
I would not need any non-public information such as user account details, as the site would be completely read-only.
I am more than happy to put the work into gathering all of the content and making this initiative happen, as well as to pay for any costs such as hosting and bandwidth. If you can advise me on Microsoft’s and the GotDotNet team’s interest in this idea I’d appreciate it. I’m happy to sign any agreements that might be necessary to facilitate this discussion further.
Regards,
Paul Stovell

Now, I think this is a pretty cool idea.
I saw Sandy Khaund's earlier post, An Ode To GotDotNet as well as Betsy Aoki's thoughts, Gotdotnet & the 7 year switch - to CodePlex! And it got me thinking.
So, I've sent a note to Sandy and the team.
Let's see where this goes.
