KB Article: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2387587

INTRODUCTION

When you try to open an Excel, Word, or PowerPoint 2010 file from Outlook or from the Internet, Office reports the file as being corrupted and cannot be opened. Although the error message is different for each application, the result is the same. Errors may include the following:

Excel:

"The file is corrupted and cannot be opened."

Word:

"Word Experienced an error trying to open the file."

PowerPoint:

"PowerPoint found a problem with content in <filename>. PowerPoint can attempt to repair the presentation."

If your file is truly corrupt, there are a number of things you can try to recover it. Firstly try a third-party recovery tool PowerPoint Repair Toolbox. You may download it on http://www.powerpoint.repairtoolbox.com/

Well, what happened for me is that any word or ppt or pptx file that got emailed to me would be corrupted. This would include files I knew were fine, then emailed to myself, then the downloaded version was corrupt. The solution for me: In each of Word, Powerpoint, and Excel . . . go to File-Options-Trust Center-Trust Center Settings-Protected View and uncheck all the boxes. Fixed it for me. And makes me wonder if OpenOffice would now be a better choice.
