We just released another Fix it Knowledge Base (KB) article. This Fix it shows system icons in the notification area as described in KB 945011.

    Nice! This is one of the top FAQs in Vista. I earlier made a VBS to fix this.

    Couldn't get the icons to appear using the Taskbar Dialogue - options were greyed out. The real questions is what caused it to happen in the first place. I haven't installed any software except the required windows updates.   Could you help me with one other thing please, I have a blank space where an Icon should appear but it appears to be hidden. How can I find out what is causing this please? Thank you.

    This is a very good work-around for me because I will need to use it about once a month.

    Thanks, It does restore my missing Icons, but the trouble is that I have to run it every time I turn on my system. Is there anything else I could do to solve my problem?

    Fix the problem temporary. But is not a real solution. What I need to know is why I get the problem. The better way to fix a problem is to fix the real cause and not the the effect... I'm disappointed about the professionalism of Microsoft. --> Just for this solution!

    Did not work on mine. Can not get battery and volume to appear in notification area.

    Worked like a charm. I just had to go back into properties, where I was then able to check the block wheras it was grayed out before.

    Whilst I am glad that the "fix-it-for-me" option, I have had to run this twice in two weeks to restore the volume control to the notification area. Surely there should be something more permanent available as a fix?

    did anyone have this problem before they installed internet exployer 8?  when i installed ie-8,trouble started, no network,volume or power icons,all grayed out. only clock can be checked. i uninstalled ie-8 next day,back to ie-7.problem still there, i will keep working, troubleshooting, etc.

    This does not work.  Come on Microsoft.  Get a Good solution.  I want to be able to call a tech and get real support without paying through the nose.  Your updates caused the problem put some time into "the solution" Bob

    This FIX works as long as I don't run any updates.If I do the same problems occur and I have to run this FIX again.Its getting boring now.SORT THIS OUT please.

    Worked a few times and was more convenient than rebooting (although some way of fixing the catual problem be nice).  Unfortunately, it doesn't work anymore.  Back to rebooting and cursing Mr. Gates.  Sigh.

    Fixed the problem temporarily but keeps on recurring and need to run fix it again and again.  How can I permanently solve this problem?

    Hi, I used the fix it twice now but everytime I turn the computer back on, the icons are gone again. Any suggestions?

    This problem occurred when I first bought my computer in Feb of last year and then went away.  Now it is back.  I have to use the fix it routine almost everday to get the icons back.  As everybody else indicates you need to solve this problem.  Your updates and new software development need to consider Customer Investment Protection as a key requirement of updates.   Bill

    This is not a fix.  The real fix is to fix the cause of this problem, not the symptom.  I have to run this so-called "fix-it" almost every time I restart the computer.  Microsoft will lose customers over this, and rightly so.  I, for one, will strongly consider a Mac next time.  I have installed Windows updates for the past 3 years hoping the problem would be solved, and it is still there.  Microsoft should be embarrassed over this.
