Hello Sobi, Thanks for providing the above information. However, to determine what service the Print Spooler is dependent on to start we will need the output from the following command. "sc qc spooler" (without the quotes) Thanks, -brian

Christie, There does not normally appear to be a way to remove Spooler. That's the reason the Fix it did not restart the service; it did not exist. The missing registry entries are suspect. It would be prudent to ensure your machine is not hosting some malware or the like. Microsoft's online scan is here: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm. If you are still unable to get the spooler service installed please use the "Get help now" link that is at the top of every KB article. This will help you discover the best support option for you to get your issue resolved. /Steve

If Spooler won't run at all, it may be crashing each time it tries to start.
  1.  Open Problem Reports and Solutions by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Problem Reports and Solutions.
  2.  In the left pane, click View problem history.
  3.  Double-click the problem that you want to view.
  4.  Use the "Copy to clipboard" link in the lower left corner and email the blog. If you need immediate assistance, please click "Get Help" on any of our KB articles. Thanks, John

Christie, I am not sure how the spooler services were removed from the Service Control Manager (SCM). SCM is the one reporting the spooler service is not installed. That said, there is not an easy way to get it back installed. If you can, please run the two following commands. These will dump some text to a file on your desktop. Then mail the file to fixit4me@microsoft.com. reg query hklmSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesSpooler /s >> %userprofile%desktopspooler.txt reg query hklmSYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPrint /s  >> %userprofile%desktopspooler.txt /Steve

It seems that I also have this issue and have tried the many fixes suggested in these comments however I'm still unable to resolve the issue.  I'm running XP Pro and had four printers networked which all have disappeared and when I click on 'Add Printer' or view the server properties I get the same error message.  I ran “sc queryex spooler >> spooler.txt” but I do not know what I'm looking for to have it any use to me.  What else could I do to restore the print spooler? Thanks, Ken Noon

Greetings Tim, Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. When you mentioned "it failed", do you mean the Fix it failed to run or it failed to resolve your issue? If the Fix it failed to run can you provide any error messages or details about the failue? If the Fix it ran but didn't resolve your issue are you having the same issue that is described in Knowledge Base article 314876 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314876)? The Fix it is only designed to resolve the issue described in 314876 so if you are having a different issue the Fix it won't resolve it. If you are having the issue described in 314876 can you plese run the following command based on your operating system? Since you are running Windows XP please open a command prompt. You may do this by selecting Start > All Programs > Accessories and selecting Command Prompt. In the command prompt type "sc qc spooler" (without the quotes). Now type "sc start spooler" (without the quotes). Please let us now what the exact output and/or error messages are. Sincerely, Steve

Vijay, I suspect that your Lexmark printer software is preventing spooler from starting. For a test, let's remove the dependency Lexmark put in spooler and set spooler back to defaults. Run the following commands in a command prompt.    Sc config spooler depend= rpcss  Sc start spooler If this starts spooler for you I recommend you go to Lexmark's site and install the latest driver for your model printer. Or you could uninstall the Lexmark software, but I don't know how that would affect your ability to print. /Steve

Christie, One more thing to try. This following command assumes the OS is installed in c:windows. Also note the space after the equals sign. Use this, without the quotes. "sc create spooler binPath= %systemroot%system32spoolsv.exe start= auto" /Steve NOTE: Updated to change c:windows to %systemroot% to account for scenarios where the operating system is not installed on a C drive.

Sobi, If the sc qc and queryex commands  on spooler failed with that error it sounds like the Spooler service is missing. Which it was missing before. So, let's try to create the spooler service again. "sc create spooler binPath= %systemroot%system32spoolsv.exe start= auto" Please note that there is a space between the equals mark and the part following it. That is needed. Then, if successful, run "sc qc spooler" and "sc queryex spooler"  and let us know what it finds. /Steve

Steve I'm thinking that doing a repair may be the quickest solution to bring my system back to as normal as can be so that I can install printers again? ... or is there a simpler way to add the print spool services? I see the printers are listed in the registry with some spool services. I'd like to prevent a parallel installation if at all possible. Thanks! Christie

I have a problem with my spooler, it started when I re installed everything on my computer some time ago, I'm fed up of not being able to use a printer. I used to have a lexmark installed but got rid of it some time ago. Could I have failed to reinstall something? The error message comes up:- The print spooler service is not running. I have tried all of the commands you have here but still no joy. I get :- The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. Please Help

I have used fix it to "restart" sprint spooler. I am using XP Pro OS I have tried starting print spooler manually.  It starts amd say Stop service Restart Service.  When I go to install printers no printers show and it gives me a error message when I add printer. "operation can not be completed. print spooler is not running" Up to this print I had 3 printers running on this computer.  HP Laserjet, Brother Multi Fax, Start recipt printer.  None of them are or have been a lexmark.

I have a problem printing.  My computer runs on Vista Home Premium.  I went to print and it showed no printers.  I have run the option under Print Spooler Properties and have had to start it but it keeps on stopping.  I have tried running you "Fix It" option also and while it started it it stopped again.

Just thought I should give you the error message - once I have started it and then it stops again it gives me the message - Spooler Subsystem App stopped working and was closed.  A Problem caused the application to stop working correctly.  Windows will notify you if a solution is available.

I have all the problem states above, spooler not reconize and all.I use all the advises on this blog, to no avail. Like I said before Microsoft create problems ( os updates ) and the public have to pay to fix it. Hey that is the way to make millions on our back. I solve my problem very well: I remove XP service pack #3 and now I have no more printer spooler mesages and I can use my printer. Good luck to you all, my next computer, mac. Dan

I can run the printer spooler fix it program and it says its successful.  But when I go to add a printer, first it tells me that "Operation could not be completed."...then I click on add printer again and I get "Operation could not be completed.  The printer spooler service is not running."  My printer worked when I was running 32-bit XP Pro but I upgraded to 64-bit XP x64 and windows can't even add a printer.

I have a similar issue.  The spoolsrv is running in the task manager but does not exist under services.  I get critical errors regarding the spoolsrv.exe and it shuts down.  I see this in the eventvwr and it calls it a application error.  Also I get an error something about the spooler subsystem application failing.  I did have the braviax malware on here but got rid of it.  But it seems to have done some damage already or so I guess since there is obviously an error still present after a reboot.  Is there any way to protect from getting this in the future?  I have Trend Micro on our server, I would think that would protect me.  Should I run Malwarebytes daily?  Thanks.  email me asap at phil@jasonwray.net, thanks.

I have tried the fix-it above and followed the manual directions. When I follow the manual directions to fix through administrative tools, I get an error message 'error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start.' I am trying to install a new printer and have no printers currently installed. I run Windows Vista. I am unable to use the command prompts directions to create spooler.txt on my desktop.

Hi, For some reason my printer stopped working all of a sudden yesterday.  I'm on Windows XP SP3.  I keep getting "Printers:  Operation could not be completed.  The printer spooler service is no running." message when I attempt to look at my printers in the Printers and Faxes window.  Here's my spooler.txt log which appears to be the same as others who have posted in this blog. I have tried every possible combination of start and stop on the spooler (manual as well as "FIX IT" and it will not work.  I did not install any new printers. The spooler error just started happening AGAIN.  Had this problem 6 months ago under the same conditions (no new printer installed).  Is there a microsoft patch?

I've tried using the fixit on 314876 -- I get an error message: "Service 'Print Spooler'(spooler) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." I've also tried the command prompt tips noted in previous posts to this blog.  With sc qc spooler, I got apparent success: SERVICE_NAME: spooler   TYPE        : 110 WIN32_OWN_PROCESS   START_TYPE  : 2  AUTO_START   ERROR_CONTROL : 1  NORMAL   BINARY_PATH_NAME  : C:WINDOWSsystem32spoolsv.exe   LOAD_ORDER_GROUP  : SpoolerGroup   TAG         : 0   DISPLAY_NAME  : Print Spooler   DEPENDENCIES  : LexBceS                 : RPCSS   SERVICE_START_NAME  : LocalSystem But when I put in the command "sc start spooler" I get: [SC] StartService FAILED 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start. And "sc create spooler binPath= %systemroot%system32spoolsv.exe start= auto" gives me: [SC] CreateService FAILED 1073: The specified service already exists. What should I do? liz

Liz, You should be able to run the following commands in an elevated command prompt to resolve your issue. "sc config spooler depend= RPCSS" Then, "sc start spooler" You do NOT need the quotes. And there IS a space after the equals sign. /Steve

On the start of operation of printing, appears message : "Nie można ukończyć operacji. Usługa buforowania wydruku nie jest uruchomiona." ("Unable to complete the operation. Spooler service is not running.") This problem is actuated on page:support.microsoft.com/.../pl   but I can't do anuthing with it!
