Microsoft Fix it Solution for opening SQL firewall port is Live!
How do I open the firewall port for SQL Server on Windows Server 2008?
We just released another Fix it Knowledge Base (KB) article. This Fix it addresses the following scenario:
Windows Firewall on Windows Server 2008 helps prevent unauthorized access to computer resources. However, if the firewall is configured incorrectly, attempts to connect to an instance of SQL Server may be blocked. To access an instance of SQL Server that is behind the firewall, you must configure the firewall on the computer that is running SQL Server.

The preconditions for the Microsoft Fix simply check to make sure it's server by checking Property(C): MsiNTProductType = 3 And then it checks to make sure SQL is installed on the machine, by checking for this keys and setting SQLSERVER property. Does this key exist? SYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesMSSQLSERVER msiexec/i OpenSQLFirewallPort.msi /l voicewarmup /log c:fixitfixit.log You can get a logfile of the Microsoft Fix it to check the log using the above command to see if the properties are set.
