Hello Leo, I had the same problem a few weeks ago.  Try the following commands to see if it clears up the looping problem. Type cd C:windowswinsxs, and then press ENTER. Type ren pending.xml pending.old, and then press ENTER.  These steps are desribed in the following KB article http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/949358 which we are incorporating into a larger Fix it.  Thanks,  John

Hello Shannon, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. Would it be possible to e-mail us the WindowsUpdate.log file located in c:windows? The WindowsUpdate file will provide information that should allow me to narrow down why Windows Update is failing for you. If we can determine why it is failing we can then update the Fix it solution so that it helps others that run into the same issue you did. If you need immediate assistance, please use "Get Help Now" link at the top right of the Knowledge Base article. Thanks, -brian

Hello Jack, Thank you for taking the time to send us feedback. 0x8000FFFF usually represents “generic” failures for which the program is not able to identify the exact cause at the time the failure occurs.   You can check to see if the Volume Shadow Copy service is set to Manual and is not disabled. Select Start In the Start Search field type services.msc and press the enter key In the Services console scroll down the list until you get to Volume Shadow Copy If the service states it is Disabled in Startup Type column the double click to open the properties Select the Startup type drop down list and select Manual Click Ok Close the services console Attempt to run the backup again This issue is a bit outside of the Windows Update Fix it that we released for the 0x8000FFFF error. If the above steps do not resolve your issue you can open a support incident by using the “Get Help Now” link at the top right of any of our Knowledge Base articles. Thanks, -brian

Hello Kayak Gal, Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. The MSI is failing to run due to not being able to call VBScript. Can you go through the following steps to see if this resolves the 2738 error?

  1. Run Command Prompt as administrator a) Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories b) Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator
  2. If you are using 32-bit version of Windows: Type cd %windir%system32 into the Command Prompt and hit Enter If you are using 64-bit version of Windows: Type cd %windir%syswow64 into the Command Prompt and hit Enter
  3. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll into the Command Prompt and hit Enter Thanks, -brian

I have an ACER 5310 Laptop running Vista Home Basic (32 bit), which has refused to update for over a year. I ran the "Fix Windows Update error 0x8000FFF" tool as suggested, but upon invocation the tool helpfully reports: > This "Fix It" does not apply to your system. I therefore attempted to edit the registry manually, as per the instructions on support.microsoft.com/kb/946414 Your instructions say to remove the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINECOMPONENTSPendingXmldentifier I have located in the registry the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINECOMPONENTSPendingXmlldentifier which is very similar but note the subtle difference in the spelling of "PendingXmlldentifier". Is this simply a misprint in the instructions (in which case Microsoft really ought to take more care when providing instructions for something as crucial as the editing of registry keys), or are they indeed different keys?

  • Anonymous
    January 25, 2009
Hi Brian Thanks for such a quick response. I followed those instructions, and the key has duly gone. However, I am still unable to perform an update. This time the error code is 80073712. I've found the following page on the issue http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957310/en-us which I'll try next unless you have any alternative suggestions. Thanks again. Simon

I ran into this problem (stage 3 of 3 stuck in endless reboot loop) last night when rebooting my laptop after going through windows update process for my Vista Home Premium system. After finding the Fix It solution, the system came back up, but there is not way to get anymore updates, it constantly errors out with various error codes. After the update is attempted and failed. and the system is rebooted, the same "3 of 3" loop happens until the Fix It solution is attempted. Then the system boots up. The update process is therefore not working at all. Furthermore, the boot time has increased; the wake up time from sleep has increased; I cannot run sfc process, ir keep telling me to reboot because there is a fix pending (reboot does not help). I ran Checksur.exe after downloading it, but it made no difference. I also attempted to install Windows Update Agent standalone package, but it also failed with the similar error code as Windows Update itself.

  • Anonymous
    February 23, 2009
John, I tried that as well. So far I tried the registry, the pending.xml file, the Checksur., even reinstalling the updage agent itself. No luck. And, as I said, certain funcitons of the laptop are just not as speedy, it takes significantly longer to boot up, same for shutdown. And the update just doesn't work, the error codes are sometimes different. I also cannot enable ordisable any of vista's features, although the Fix It solution above seems to at least gove me the list of installed features back. However, unchecking or checking any feature always errors out with some "unknown error" or such.

    February 23, 2009
Steve, I did that. I got the same error or errors when running the standalog agent install as I got from running any of windows updates. I just really hate the idea of reinstalling the OS. It takes too much time to reinstall all the software.

Brian, Just wanted to thank you for the fix (below) and ask you why error 8000ffff comes to be with Vista? I was setting up my girlfriends laptop and came across the error when trying to get her the latest updates from Microsoft. I have my MCSE, but have never run into this before!!! At any rate, it succeeded to work...much appreciated.

  3. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll into the Command Prompt and hit Enter

Toshiba Satellite laptop with Vista Home Premium started have problems with audio, WiFi connectivity, keyboard keys and antivirus immediately after an automatic update of SP1. Uninstalled SP1, and all previous problems vanished.  Checked for updates to audio and WiFi, and reinstalled antivirus.  All still working fine at this point. Downloaded fresh copy of SP1, and it failed with the 0x8000FFFF error.  I've tried all the steps above without success.  Spent over 2 hours on the phone to Microsoft AT MY EXPENSE, and they cannot fix it. Since this bug-ridden Service Pack clearly doesn't work, what are the implications of running the operating system without it?

Hi, My old computer finally died and I purchased a new computer.  I installed my (legal) copy of WIN Vista Ultimate 64bit and downloaded and installed WIN Vista updates sucessfully. Over a period of weeks I sucessfully downloaded and installed a number of additional critical and optional updates.   Unfortunately I had a power failure in the middle of installing an update.  When power was restored I tried to reinstall the updates and got the 0x8000FFFF error.   I ran fix it but it fails with "This fix does not apply to your system message"   How do I overcome this problem?  Hope you can help, thanks in advance

I have tried the Fix It tool and am told that it is not applicable to my computer. The manual approach is a dead end as well.  I have also confirmed that the Volume Shadow Copy is set to Manual per the thread above.   Please provide next steps.  Thank you.

Just began noticing when I would boot up, I would get the window "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and then "Looking for a solution".  It would do this repeatedly, several times in a row, even though my IE was still functioning.  Tried to do a system restore to several weeks ago, and it didn't work. Tried another system restore and another and another and got the same error message, "System restore could not be completed, error 0x8000ffff".  I have tried using the cmd dskchk/f and dskchk/r ops, to no avail.  Any help advice would be appreciated...

you can try to perform a quick repair the existing office installation.
I don't recommend an online installation as it may reset the activation settings.
for more understanding, I hope the below link should be useful for you.
