Fix Print Spooler
Fix printing problems by resetting the print spooler
Fix it for me
This Fix it Solution automates resetting the Print Spooler on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.
The Fix it has two modes: Light and Full. The light mode will make changes to the spooler that should not require the end user to make any changes. The full mode will restore the print spooler to defaults and require a reinstall of printers.

Had same problems as described, and tried these and other suggested solution with no job. Symption: Spooler problem manifested and executed MS Fixit for me solution with no success. All other USB devices worked, except USB printer would NOT be recognized. Finally succeeded by removing "USB Printing Support" driver from Control Panel>System>HArdware>Device Manager>Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Reboot and let system automatically reinstall USB Printing Support by itself. Took 2 tried for me, since 1st reinstall was corrupted somehow, but finally worked! Good luck. I was on the brink of the dreaded reinstallation of XP from scratch. -daveAnonymous

As I'm running the fix it program I get an error message that states "Malicious Script Detection" file Msiexec.exe After this error message appears I try to override twice, then it comes back to say that fix it was unable to finish. I wrote on this blog yesturday and I still haven't heard from you guys. Thank you for reading....Anonymous

Spoke too soon! (see above post) Using Vista Ultimate, ran this fix, I rebooted, added the printers and it was fixed. User shut down for the night, when it came back up the print spooler problem was back. If you have a solution: Please post! Now my user hates Vista and we are looking for an alternative OS. I just used this yesterday on a neighbor's printer which had jobs stuck in the queue and had too many windows open to reboot:)) It is such a pleasure to hear that the Fixit Team has been moved back to Charlotte where it started, congratulations to all the folks who helped build this incredible program. Fixit still comes up in conversations and people love it. hurray and congrats folks! Sincerely, Paul SchottlandAnonymous

A brief history. I hope it is accurate.
- I tried to install a printer on my computer at a new job. It was not successful and I got a printer spooler error.
- My printer at home stopped working.
- I deleted all printer drivers per a suggestion somewhere and then started getting "The RPC server is unavailable" when turning computer on.
- Tried to turn print spooler on - got a 1068 error.
- I ran the FixPrintSpooler.msi and it failed to process and had a link to this blog.
- I came to this blog saw what appeared to be a link to an improved fix (fix-print-spooler.aspx) and it just reloads this blog page. PS My printer is also a scanner, copier, and fax. The other day I could not send a fax. thsi may or may not be related.

I have spent hours & hours trying to fix my "printer spooler service in not running" issue. I have blogged, went to tech sites, had long tech chat emails, very long, spent time in the registry (very scary place for a new-b to be!)...tried everything they suggested, nothing worked! Tonight I STUMBELED into the Fix It, used it and I can print for the 1st time in over a month...did I mention long chats? THANK YOU!!Anonymous

Fix the print spooler error by editing registry in safe mode. The only reason of this error is some printer files conflicting with adobe acrobat professional. so if u have adobe acrobat professional please uninstall it and just install adobe acrobat reader for better performanceAnonymous

You guys are great. Most grateful. I found that the "heavy" version was needed Excellent ! Thanks for saving the day. Removing Acrobat and defragging created the problem I think. I was about to give up after complete Epson uninstall (18 processes to do), and restarting print spoiler in Admin Tools, Services, and attemting reinstalling original software from CD left me with no printer installed, (as spoiler stopped itself in mid process each time).Anonymous

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 Desktop running Windows XP Professional SP3 and a Dell 720 Color photo printer connected via USB port. My documents print completely but will not clear spooler with status "Deleting - Printed - Printing". If I turn the printer off for 10 sec and then turn back it back on the document will clear and I can continue printing the next document. I do not have "Retain documents after printing" selected, I have tried deleting and reinstalling the printer software and driver numerous times. I have tried stopping and restarting the spooler. I have tried deleting files in "C:WindowsSystem32DriversPrinters". I have tried running the "Fix It" program light and full. Then rebooting the computer and reinstalling the Dell 720 printer software and driver. I have tried using another USB cable. Nothing I have tried has solved the problem. Documents continue to remain in spooler que after printing and hold up other print jobs. Anyone have any other ideas besides changing driver to print directly to printer?Anonymous

My printer has a document sitting in the print queue with the statius as deleting, the job is 14.6MB. It's been sitting like this for nearly a week now. I have deleted the printer and re-installed it. I've stoped and started the spooler and also checked that there is no files in the spooler folder (I was informed that I should delete these if any and that would clear the queue also), but nothing I do is getting rid of the job and I can't print anything else.. I have just tried this fix it and i still can't print. Is there any other way to clear this job? Please help me.Anonymous

Thank you, Fix it Team! This Fix it (in Full mode) solved a very annoying problem we were having. The Printers and Faxes folder showed that no print jobs were queued and the printer was online. I started getting this on Windows 7 Ultimate, full build - however, it ONLY occurs when I am trying to print a PDF from Adobe Reader (I have version 9.3 installed). Other apps printed fine. I really need the PDF, so I had it print to an .xps doc, and then printed that and it worked fine. Wondering how many of the other people who can't use the easy fix are having issues with PDFs? Seems like at least a few in my various searches. Perhaps the issue is with Adobe, and not Microsoft?Anonymous

I had simular problems . Don’t know why but after every once in a while some win updates or after installing certain programs, the printspooler crashes. The cause is there is an addon (http) to the DependOnService value of the printspooler, this causes the problem the printspooler stops or printers disappear. In windows 7 do the following: Click on Windows 7 (Start) button, and type Regedit.exe in search bar Navigate to the following branch HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services Spooler In the right-pane, double-click the DependOnService value Delete the existing data, and then type RPCSS (remote procedure call) Close Regedit.exe Restart the computer. This will solve your problem.Anonymous

Seconding Brian's comment 29 Jan. Some of us still run XP. Surely it doesn't cost anything to keep the fix available for it? Reading this blog, it's clear this fixit is the only thing which can kick-start a print spooler which has suddenly apparently ceased to exist, like mine. I'm not a teccie so sorting out registry is not for me. Anyway if this has been a recurrent problem with your software, Messrs Microsoft, why haven't you fixed it properly years ago?Anonymous

I tried the automatic "fix it for me" and nothing was repaired. I was told they couldn't detect the problem though I got a message when I tried to put the pc on standby after my printer had jammed and wouldn't print anything I was working on. If you are managing a network of users and need to keep printers up & running while you troubleshoot, you can try this: SpoolWatch is a print server auto-restart service that will automatically restart a print spooler within seconds of a crash - eliminating downtime for users. It even keeps a log for administrator tracking and troubleshooting. Fixing a Print spool problem on Windows XP I encountered a problem with adding a printer after removing an old printer and the spooler service would not start. After a many hours of searches and fixes that did not work I came up with a solution that solved the issue. Here is the fix to my problem:
- Make sure C: windows/system32/spoolsv.exe file is there
- Check Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance>Administrative tools>Services for Print Spooler a. If it is there then you are ok b. Proceed if it is not there
- Run Regedit.exe to check the registry
- Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServices a. Check for the Spooler folder in the tree b. If it is not there you need to import a copy from another computer or your original registry backup under the Services folder
- Restart your computer
- Print Spooler should show up in the services list again
- Try adding a printer. It will work.

I recently installed windows 10. I keep getting an error message that the printer spooler does not work. i can find absolutely no remedy for this on Microsoft, and I cannot uninstall and reinstall the printer. Maybe I should just abandon windows 10 if it can't be fixed. what do you think?Anonymous
