I have Windows XP Professional SP3 installed on two computers. One computer cannot receive updates including MS Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 or any other updates such as Adobe or Java. I receiving conflicting error messages when I work through the MS help for this problem - such as Windows Installer - not installed or Windows Installer up-to-date. Recommended third party sfw fixes cannot be installed. No problems with my other computer.

I have a similar issue on trying to install KB2656370 after applying SP3.  Went through the MS Fixit routine and didn't solve it.  I wonder if there is a nice fixit to repair any/all update failures.

I am getting a blank gray square covering the download page for either windows installer 3.1.0.0 or 4.5. I am running Windows XP after reformatting my computer. I have successfully updated SP2 and IE 8, but SP3 will not install. The message is "the program requires windows installer 3.1.0.0 (or greater). I can't put my AV back on until I have SP3, and I can't get SP3 without the installer. Why am I getting the large gray block instead of the download button? Help!
