Welcome to the Extended Events blog

If you haven’t gotten a chance to explorer Extended Events yet, then you’ll probably want to read about it first in Books Online. You can start at the SQL Server Extended Events topic and work from there. From the BOL topics you’ll learn that Extended Events is a “general event-handling system for server systems” and you’ll likely think, Great! What the heck does that mean? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Within this blog the SQL Server Extended Events team will attempt to unlock the mysteries of Extended Events by providing more in-depth coverage of the system, giving examples of how to use the various targets and occasionally pulling back the curtain to give you a look at the inner workings of Extended Events.

We’ll do our best to provide interesting and educational topics for you, but like every conversation, it works best if it goes two ways. If there is something specific you’d like to see posted to the blog, let us know by using the email link. If you have questions on an existing post, feel free to add a comment. There are a few things that this blog is not the best place for: support questions, bug reports and feature requests. If you have any of those, consider the following options:

  • MSDN Forums: The SQL Server Database Engine forum is a good place to go for free, peer to peer support about all things Database Engine related, including Extended Events.
  • Microsoft Support: If you have a question that requires more immediate attention, I suggest you contact our support group directly. You can find a number of support options on the support web site.
  • Microsoft Connect: If you think you’ve found a bug or you have a feature request you can submit those on the SQL Server Connect site. From this site you can also search for similar issues that others have submitted, vote on issues that you have experienced and track the status of issues that have been submitted.

You’ll see a number of folks posting to this blog so I’ll let them introduce themselves along the way. You can find out more about me that you’d probably like to know by clicking on my name at the bottom of this post. If you’re posting about Extended Events, let us know; eventually I’ll figure out how to get a list of other bloggers shown on this page.
