Setup Microsoft Dynamics Data Migration Manager (Part2)

Within the first part (please refer to https://blogs.msdn.com/b/emeadcrmsupport/archive/2010/02/05/import-data-into-microsoft-dynamics-crm-4-0-part1.aspx), we talked about the differences between the “Import Wizard” and the “Data Migration Manager”.

Now we would like to go ahead and install the Data Migration Manager (DMM).

1. Install the Data Migration Tool (DMM)

a) The DMM is available via the following URL: https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6766880a-da8f-4336-a278-9a5367eb79ca&displaylang=en
b) Download the files, save the files in a folder (ex: DMM) and execute the setupdmclient.exe file.
c) Select “I accept this license agreement” and click “I Accept”
d) Select the database server type, we will use during the setup
e) Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime component.

For more details about this component, you can access the following link
The "installed requirement components" report indicates that the Visual C++ runtime components are missing when you install Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/950421

f) Select Installation Location and click “Next”

Note: When you are installing the DMM tool on the server (It is possible, but not supported) the following error might appear.
image

This issue occurs, because the DMM Tool is checking the CRM install directory in the following registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Products\059DD8CB00184F24E99A62CF4D6109FA\InstallProperties]
Value: InstallLocation

-> If the value of the InstallLocation variable is empty, the error will occur.

g) Click “Next”. And click “Close” to finish the installation.

2. Configuring the DMM tool

To run the DMM tool, we just need to sign-in and configure DMM.
a) Open “Start / All Programs / Microsoft Dynamics CRM” and select Microsoft Dynamics CRM Data Migration Manager
b) Click in “Sign In” and  Click “Next” in the welcome window
c) Select the way you want to connect and click “Next”. Enter the CRM Server URL and click “Next”
d) Enter the password of the user and click “Next”
f)  Enter the SQL server NetBIOS name and click “Next” twice
g) Check if the settings are correct and click “Next”

The DMM’s configuration will take some minutes and the final result should be similar to the following:

Now, we are ready to use the Data Migration Tool!

3. Troubleshooting DMM

If any issue occurs during the setup, we would suggest you as a first step to execute the following action plan
a) Open the folder %APPDATA%\Microsoft\MSCRM\Logs\
b) Open and analyze the files below

  1. Crm40DMClientConfig.log
  2. Crm40dmsnapin.log
  3. Crm40dmsnapin.MM-DD-YYYY-HH-MM-SS-XX.log
  4. DataMigrationWiz_Setup.log

If you cannot find the cause, you should contact the Microsoft Dynamics Support.
