Dot-Com Meets SharePoint: Building an Internet-Facing Web Site Using Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

Hi

My name is Jim Masson, and I'm a Lead Program Manager working on the Web Content Management features of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. I'm using my talk at TechEd in Boston (OFC323) as a good excuse to post my first blog entry here. I'm not going to duplicate the talk here, but I will use this as a chance to provide additional details in a few areas as well as a venue for questions and feedback.

As you can tell from the title, this post is all about using the 2007 release of Office SharePoint Server as a tool to build great Internet facing sites. This has been a very serious effort and theme for the team during this release, which makes it really fun to get a chance to stand up and talk about it.

I'm going to be conducting a couple of Chalk Talks, which are really Q&A sessions on WCM, in the TLC Green Zone. Some specific times to catch me:

  • Thursday 9:45 – 11:00 AM
  • Thursday 2:45 – 4:00 PM

There is also a talk on Thursday focused on migrating from CMS 2002

  • OFC329 Migrating Your Content Management Server 2002 Web Sites to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
    • Thursday 1:00 - 2:15 PM (259 AB)

If you are interested in content deployment, Tyler Butler did a great write-up of the Content Deployment feature over on the SharePoint Team Blog. There are also some existing blog entries on security and performance, which are both topics that are very relevant to Internet facing sites.

Finally, I posted a copy of the slides to the talk here.

The team will be posting some additional blog entries in the coming weeks that expand on the features that we are building to enable great Internet facing sites on SharePoint Server. If there are topics that are of particular interest, please don't hesitate to ask by posting a comment.
