Applying an update to Management Reporter 2012
Today, I’ve got tips for you when applying the update to Management Reporter 2012 Char mentions here.
The high level steps for the update are:
- Read the documentation
- Download the update
- Update the server
- Update the database
- Update the clients
After you’ve updated the server, be sure to open the Configuration Console when prompted. The Configuration Console is where you’ll update your database.
In the bottom left, you’ll find a Task List containing links for you to take action. The number of links you see in the task list depends on the Microsoft Dynamics ERP you are using with Management Reporter 2012. ( You need to update the database first. If you try to connect to the application service before updating the database, you’ll get an error message. Also, make sure the user updating the database has the db_owner role!)
Once you’ve updated the database and the task list is empty, it’s time to update your Management Reporter clients. If you try to run the Management Reporter Designer or Report Viewer without updating, you’ll receive a message stating the versions don’t match and the client won’t connect.
Now that you’ve updated the server, database and clients you’re ready to take advantage of the bug fixes and performance improvements made with this update!

Found the documentation confusing. One of the issues is when you are on the screen when you have to choose what to install it shows 2 items checked off and gives you a link to additional information about your ERP system. Any other Microsoft install would list what to do per install. Would make it a lot easier so that then we would know why the ERP wasn't showing up. And why isn't stuff like the above and trouble-shooting out on CustomerSource. The only stuff on CustomerSource is training and how to's. This has been real weak as far as troubleshooting. A lot of us can read manuals, but if we miss something the only way is to call our VAR or pay microsoft. And does this mean we will be getting another version update soon with a fix for MR2012 Fx. Hi Jill, I agree with Sue as regarding the documentation... Our users are complaining about the lack of any recent documentation for the MR 2012, since the training guide was based back on the version 2.0. Also every upgrade comes with some changes and if you don't compare the setup instructions byte by byte, you easily miss the differences and don't notice them, which can lead to some confusions and error during the update / setup of the new version. I agree too that the partners mostly don't have a clue about MR... it's kinda another planet for them. Lack of information down the channel ? If Microsoft wants Management Reporter to succeed as the replacement of FRx 6.7, then maybe they should start to spend some time on quality information to the end-users too, not rely only on the blogosphere (which is good to get a stream of news, but cannot replace solid and consistent documentation). YouTube is a nice way to let users know what's coming, but it should only be used to complement written documentation, not replace it. We encourage the MR team to keep up with the good work done so far. Thank you and have a great time, BeatAnonymous

Don't mean to keep the broken record going here but I too had trouble following the documentation. I'm a VAR and working with FRx for the last 16 years and I am having trouble following the latest upgrade path from MR 2.1 to MR2012. To compound the matter I think that the client is still running on Win Server 2003 and there is even a more confusing method to update the database. I really need some help here understanding just what has happened and how to proceed. Thanks for any help you can give, Sheila Jefferson-RossAnonymous

Hi, I'm trying to update a client from MR 2012, CU8 to CU11. I am receiving the error message that "the upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program..." The product IS installed and is a previous version. What could be going on? Also, I have to agree with the documentation... :) Thanks! Heidi
