Goodbye SkyDrive, Hello OneDrive
You might remember, last year, that British Sky Broadcasting Group (aka BSkyB) decided that they owned the name SkyDrive and so they took Microsoft to court and won.
So today, the new name for SkyDrive was announced, OneDrive....

I DO NOT LIKE THIS IDEA OF SWITCHING FROM SKY DRIVE TO ONE DRIVE. I DO NOT LIKE MICROSOFT CONTINUING TO UPDATE MOST OF THEIR WARES AND MAKING IT MORE TRASHY AND MORE LIKE A PHONE INSTEAD OF A COMPUTER. WINDOWS 8 SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN WRITTEN FOR A PC ONLY PHONES. GEEZ.................. AND NOW YOU ARE TRASHING SKYDRIVE. I HAVE REMOVED ALL MY SKYDRIVE FILES AND WILL NEVER DO A ONEDRIVE EVER. BE VERY CAREFUL MICROSOFT OR EVERYONE EVERYWHERE WILL LEAVE MICROSOFT AND GO TO APPLE (MAC) I'M GETTING CLOSE TO IT MYSELF.Anonymous

Hi MrDave007 I decided to publish your comment, even though you were SHOUTING, as it allows for a healthy conversation. I don't want to start a flame war, but here are some of my personal thoughts in response:
- Microsoft had not planned to change the name, BSkyB took them to court over the rights to the name and won.
- The change is only in the name.
- Any new or updated features were probably planned independently of the name change.
- As for Windows 8, The Modern UI works very well for touch devices and most new laptops, tablets, all-in-one and convertible machines have touch now. For machines without touch, it is still very useable and it can be customised to suit your needs.
- If you don't like the Modern UI, then boot straight to Desktop. You can install a variety of start menu tools and completely disable all Modern UI apps and features if you wish. You then would have a Windows 7 style desktop, but it would be faster, more secure and more compatible with & less demanding on hardware.
- Many people actually like that their phone, tablet, PC, (and Xbox) all have similar tiled user interfaces. It is consistent across multiple platforms.
- Using OneDrive/SkyDrive integrated into the Windows and Windows Phone systems allows for many very cool features. Such as shared documents across all devices, shared setup and configuration data, automatic backup of photos and videos, the list goes on. All I can say is that if you want to stop using OneDrive/SkyDrive or Windows that is your choice. Personally, I love the big picture of a fully integrated multi-vendor ecosystem where I can get to my stuff from any device in any location. David

Hopefully some of the changes to eventually be incorporated into OneDrive will include features from the now defunct Windows Live Mesh. With Mesh, one could synchronize a file or folder located anywhere on a PC and it was not necessary to move files to a designated folder. Also it provided seamless access to other computers, much smoother than desktop connection. When they eliminated Mesh they took two giant steps backward. Shame on them for not properly promoting Mesh.Anonymous

Hi Steve when you install the SkyDrive desktop client, you can change the folder used. DavidAnonymous

Yes, you can change the folder, but files must still be relocated. With Mesh one could synchronize any number of files or folders and leave them located where you wanted them.Anonymous

No sure if OneDrive went live today, but I noticed that both onedrive and skydrive site seem to be down. Are you experiencing the same?Anonymous

Are there any changes to the REST API? The APIs have references to SkyDrive. When will these be changed?Anonymous
