Windows Desktop Search 3.0 final version!

This just in, Windows Desktop Search, WDS, just went gold and is released to the web! You can get it here:

Windows Desktop Search 3.0 RTW for Windows XP (KB917013)

For all of the other versions for Windows 2003 Server, XP 64-bit and more go here.

Questions you may have:

Q: Does this work with OneNote/Outlook 2007 B2TR?

A: Probably not well! WDS changed and fixed a lot of issues between B2TR and now so this will fix a lot of search on the desktop but it will not work well with B2TR. Once the RTM version of Office 2007 is available it will work as expected.

Q: Should I upgrade now?

A: If you depend on search in Outlook/OneNote no matter how buggy it is in B2TR then keep working with the same version of WDS. Then when you have the final version of Office 2007 then you can install this final version of WDS 3.0. Otherwise if you depend on search on the desktop and you have issues with the current version upgrade to the final version, search in the Office apps may or may not work great.

I hope that answers everything, happy searching!!

Hi Daniel, I upgraded one of my machines to the RTW build and so far OneNote search is working great! (actually faster and better than in any previous build of WDS ;) ) Patrick

Patrick, I live and die by the search, so I may set a restore point and then install it.  If it doesn't work, then I will just do a system restore.  The searching works OK with huge amounts of printouts in a notebook, but is far from perfect--it jumps me to the location sometimes and other times it doesn't.   I'm really excited to get my hands on RTM...It kinda almost makes me want to buy a new computer so I can get the OEM build.  I'm trying to convince my school to purchase ON for all of the computers here on campus so I can test it out.  It is just stupid that we have MS Access on the computers and not ON. anyway, really excited for the search...

Doesn't seem to work with Vista RC1.  After installing RTM version of Office 2007.

Wait until the RTM version of both Vista & OneNote, then you will be all set.  Thank you!
