Moy Park and Windows Server 2008

mp_not_fs_logo

I was catching up with Phil Rickard, the Network Administrator for Moy Park the other day - he attended some Windows Server 2008 training I ran last year.  Basically, I was seeing how he was getting on with the new OS.  He had this to say:

"After attending the Longhorn Academy in Dublin, I came away with a great deal of enthusiasm for what promises to be a fantastic Server product.  I am already educating the business in the benefits of the ‘Out of the box’ features such as Hyper-V, Server Core and Terminal Services.  I can see that Hyper-V with Clustering is going to give the business and affordable Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery solution.  And the latest version of Terminal Service is now advanced enough for us to contemplate moving away from the costly licensing of Citrix.  It plans to be a busy year!"

A busy year indeed!  Not just for you Phil - I recon that Windows Server 2008 is going to be one of the quickest versions of Windows Server to get deployed.

Dave The additional TS features in 2008 have been around for years with other vendors such as Citrix,Ericom,Quest etc sure we get them "for free" as part of the O/S but I think MS misses the point here why are they just taking standard 3rd party features and adding them to the base why not truly innovate. I mean seamless windows/universal printing etc are features which have been around for ages. The MS implementation is very weak once you move out a single server implementation with remoteapp the mgt overhead severly dampens any kind of enterprise use. I'm sure if Moy Park need more than one server then Citrix will be required. Brian Madden uncovers the reality of 2008 TS features here: http://www.brianmadden.com/blog/BrianMadden/Windows-2008-Terminal-Services-versus-Citrix-Presentation-Server--XenApp-Citrix-has-nothing-to-worry-about Come on MS give us something truly innovative like enhanced multimedia on RDP or live session migration between servers or improved application/profile settings handling ? not that impressed.

I completely agree with Phillip's comments. I'm very excited about the BCDR solution and can see Terminal Service bringing an end to Citrix's dominance. It may only be a matter of time before computers take over the earth.
