Building Search for your web site with MSN Search

Love it or hate it, but search is a big thing in software development these days. Think about the upcoming releases of Windows Vista and 2007 Office System where search is built in and is indispensable once you've started using it on a daily basis.

But adding search capabilities to your own web site, just as on https://dev.live.com/ can be daunting. Think about complex problems such as indexing, relevance logic, and hosting issues such as CPU and storage. All of these issues can be difficult to solve. As a potential solution to these issues, Microsoft offers web site developers now the ability to implement the MSN Search Service on their sites.

Koji Kato has written an MSDN article - Building Search for Your Web Site with the MSN Search Service - that explains how site search capabilities were implemented for dev.live.com, and at the same time offers a starting point for you to add site search to your Web site.

Note: Microsoft allows you to use the Web service for up to 10,000 queries per day. If you have more traffic than 10,000 queries per day, you should fill out the form at https://advertising.msn.com/microsoft-adcenter/searchAPIform to enable search past that fixed amount.
