ASP.NET, AJAX and You: Introducing Microsoft Atlas at Tech Ed Europe
It's been a while since I posted an update on Tech Ed: Developers. This is Tech Ed Europe taking place in Barcelona in November and a developer-only event. An overview of the different tracks can be found here.
As owner of the web development track I've attended Tech Ed: US last month. This was the right time to meet with some folks of the ASP.NET & Atlas product teams and sign-up some speakers for our event. Keith & co give me an excellent insight what they're up to … And believe me, it just looks great!
Let's have a look the pre-conference. Given the high interest in AJAX these days and the lack of coverage at current Microsoft events in Europe, I decided to host an Atlas-only pre-conference. Atlas is a free framework for building richer, more interactive and highly personalized cross-browser web apps. As speaker for this pre-conference we signed-up Jeff Prosise. Jeff is a well-known speaker in the industry and widely appreciated for ASP.NET related talks. Jeff is working closely on Atlas with the Web Platform & Tools team. Below some more info on the pre-conference:
ASP.NET, AJAX and You: Introducing Microsoft Atlas
Microsoft's Atlas Client Script Framework is an extensible, object-oriented, 100% JavaScript framework that allows you to build Web applications featuring rich, AJAX-style UIs and client-side Web service connectivity. With Atlas, you can transform ordinary ASP.NET applications into cutting-edge Web apps that use DHTML, JavaScript, and XML-HTTP without having to be an expert in any of these technologies. This all-day pre-conference, which is jam-packed with code samples, introduces Atlas and prepares today's developers for what ASP.NET will look like tomorrow.
Presented by: Jeff Prosise
Pre-conf session abstracts:
Session 1: Introducing Atlas
Atlas simplifies the process of building rich Web user interfaces by abstracting AJAX with a 100% JavaScript client-side framework and server-side controls that utilize that framework. This session examines the AJAX support already present in ASP.NET 2.0 and shows how Atlas builds on top of that support. It also introduces Atlas's server-side programming model and acquaints developers with one of Atlas's most compelling features: the UpdatePanel control.
Session 2: Atlas on the Server
Atlas includes a suite of server-side controls that make AJAX programming as simple as dragging controls onto a form. This session introduces the Atlas server controls and presents key scenarios in which these controls can be used to enrich ASP.NET user interfaces. It also takes a closer look at the UpdatePanel control and the semantics of its use.
Session 3: Atlas on the Client
The heart of Atlas is a client-side framework that simplifies JavaScript programming and provides a base class library of prebuilt JavaScript components. This session takes a deep dive into the client-side framework and demonstrates how developers can leverage and extend it to build cutting-edge Web apps. It also introduces another of Atlas's key features: its ability to consume Web services from browser clients using autogenerated JavaScript proxies.
Session 4: Controls, Services, Gadgets, and More
This session rounds out your education on Atlas by analyzing the Atlas Control Toolkit and demonstrating how to use it and how to build custom controls of your own. It also demonstrates how to call key ASP.NET services such as the membership service and the role management service from Atlas clients, how to use Atlas to build gadgets for Windows Live, and more.
As you can see in the sessions this pre-conf will be a mix of level 200 – 300 content. By attending this pre-conference you will get a lot of code samples, demos, how-to's etc. to get a jump start with ASP.NET Atlas. Developers who have already developed applications based on AJAX technology will get a perspective on how to enhance their current ASP.NET applications with Atlas. In this pre-conf and during the other sessions you will get the latest updates on Atlas as all these speakers are closely working with the web platform product team.
All this and more info on the pre-conf can be found at https://www.mseventseurope.com/TechEd/06/Pre/Static/Developers/PCWeb.aspx
In the main conference following topics will be covered in the web development track:
- ASP.NET 2.0
- Atlas
- Windows SharePoint Services
- Windows Live
- Internet Information Services
By tomorrow you should be able to find a first set of sessions that will ran during the main conference on the web site. Have a look and provide me with some feedback. The more input we have, the more compelling we can make the agenda for you!
