Announcing Microsoft “Data Explorer” Preview for Excel

We are excited to announce availability of Microsoft “Data Explorer” Preview for Excel. “Data Explorer” enhances the Self-Service BI experience in Excel by simplifying data discovery and access to a broad range of data sources for richer insights.

"Data Explorer" provides an intuitive and consistent experience for discovering, combining, and refining data across a wide variety of sources including relational, structured and semi-structured, OData, Web, Hadoop, Azure Marketplace, and more. Data Explorer also provides you with the ability to search for public data from sources such as Wikipedia.

“Data Explorer” enables all users to benefit and derive insights from any data.

For those of you that have followed us in the past, we would like to thank you for your participation in the “Data Explorer” SQL Azure Lab.     I really liked the preview. What about the ability to publish a Data Explorer mash-up? Is it still in the pipes?

    Hello Laurent, Thanks for your feedback. We are currently focused on delivering the experience that you can try today on Preview, which enhances the self-service BI experience in Excel. The ability to publish, as supported in the old Data Explorer SQL Azure Lab, is currently not on our immediate horizon. Hope you still like and use the current preview... Thanks for your feedback.     Using the active directory portion, how does one get over the 1000 object limit of items returned? The filters don't seem to get applied until after this 1000 object limit has already been hit (i.e., in Excel itself and not the LDAP query).

    In Excel 2013 with Data Explorer, I was able to load 980 MB text file. Clicked on "Load to Data Model" when it became available. After "loading" ~1.3 million rows, it just stops and no data is loaded into Data Model. I was watching the "Retrieving data..." in the lower right of the screen to determine this. If you want to duplicate it, I can tell you where file is on Internet and what columns I removed prior to loading in DE. Cannot send data through your smile/frown interface, since I do not use Outlook.
