Foldershare - this is cool

I've been using Foldershare for a few days just to sync a few files between work and home and my initial impression is that it's really cool!

I set up a single directory on my computers to sync, put some files into them and watched as they were syncronized in the background (and its fast).  I've currently got ~430 files syncing between the two computers.

The really nice thing is that I can use the website (once logged in) to search either computer for files.  Foldershare integrates with MSN Desktop Search, so when you do a search, you get email, files or anything on your computer, complete with abstracts (very cool).

In additon, you can browse your entire file system on either computer using the website and retrieve files as needed.

You can even do it from your mobile device - just go to the website, log in and grab that power point press and email it to a client from the coffee shop with out having to go back to the office to your computer.

If you have a folder shared, you can also share it with a friend (they need to install the software - which is free), so they can sync it too.

The software is very lightweight - unlike groove (which is very cool and has lots of functionality, but is lots heavier) and doesn't have an annoying splashscreen or startup delay.

Very cool!

Interesting comments by TAG. Every other report I'd seen on it was glowing. MS bought it a month or so ago didn't they?

Tim, true. It's one of latest Microsoft toys they would like to put on new "Get Microsoft back to Life ^H^Hve" strategy ( http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2005/nov05/11-03FolderSharePR.mspx )

Actualy - for thouse who don't get what so cool about it - take a look on rsync ( http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/ ) which was available for years. With rsync you have control over your data - but with FolderShare you must trust that nobody will be stealing data from your PC.

And this is very simple as Forgot Password feature (
https://www.foldershare.com/account/password/requestReminder.php ) is weakest point. Dispute all 128-bit encryption listed in marketing pages - password send in CLEARTEXT as well request page not protected from automated queries by any catcha. My bet MS will change this to Passport auth - but still - once somebody will get control over user MS.Passport (imagine fake passport site) - he will take control over your entire PC !

    Thanks for your comments TAG.

It didn't even occur to me to try and sync hundreds gigs of data using this service, and frankly I'd question using the internet for this quantity of data anyway - particularly here in NZ where broadband connections are often limited to 10Gb a month or less.

Also - the fact that he's doing it on a Mac make me feel even better about the service, not worse.

It is true that more ports open in your firewall is bad, and this comes down to a question of risk vs benefit. I personally am prepared to err on the side of benefit in this case. I'd be interested to hear some expert opinion on the security aspects of Foldershare.

The third comment posted is the entire text of the post - there is no further context or anything to validate the claim, so I personally wouldn't put much stock in it until more details are given.

On the subject of the password forget feature, this is no different from many other websites on the internet. You say I forgot my password and it emails you a new one. Whether its the weakest link or not I dont know, but if it is, then its just a standard website :-)

The thing I find ironic (and something that I'm sure will change soon) is the fact that the foldershare site is written in PHP. ;-)
