Application Transporter 2006 at TechEd 2006

Like Erik, I had a great time in Boston at TechEd 2006 presenting sessions and giving chalk talks – the TechEd party at Fenway Park was a blast, with the opportunity to walk up and touch the famous Green Monster .  TechEd was also perfect timing for our team since we just released Application Transporter 2006 (download) the week before and I got to demo it migrating data from Notes databases to SharePoint.  I met with several customers who already started their application migrations with it -- I was more surprised to hear that 3 customers were almost done with all of their app migration!  Here were two common questions that I received:

1.  Will this tool support Windows SharePoint Server (WSS) Version 3 (link)?

2.  Will I be able to migrate security setting from Notes apps to WSS?

The answer to both questions is that we are working on the future releases of Application Transporter, and plan to support WSS V3 and support migrating more that just the data, such as the security settings.  Also many customers gave feedback that WSS V3 and Office 2007 will be the favored targets for their Notes migrations because of the new features, security capabilities, integrated workflow and application design tools.

I look forward to sharing more tips and tricks on application migrations, and hearing feedback on the new features you’d like to see in the next version of Application Transporter.

I think there's an opportunity for partners and customers to use the tool.  If you look at who participated in our beta, it was about 60% partners and 40% customers who used the tool and exercised the features.  I agree that many customers will work with a partner, for their expertise in Notes and Microsoft products, and experience using our and other tools.
