Follow me and learn Windows Server 2012 – DHCP Server High Availability

Bruce again, Day 18 and I’m Still Here!  Tonight I am learning DHCP Server High Availability. We have two new features for DHCP, a new failover and policy based IP address management features.  In my studying I found two great walk troughs of the features, a hands on lab, and a migration script.  Below are the links to help with your studying.

Step-by-Step: Configure DHCP for Failover

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831385.aspx

The DHCP server failover feature provides the ability to have two DHCP servers provide IP addresses and option configuration to the same subnet or scope, providing for continuous availability of DHCP service to clients. The two DHCP servers replicate lease information between them, allowing one server to assume responsibility for servicing of clients for the entire subnet when the other server is unavailable. It is also possible to configure failover in a load-balancing configuration with client requests distributed between the two servers in a failover relationship.

Step-by-Step: Configure DHCP Using Policy-based Assignment

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831538.aspx

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server role in Windows Server 2012 introduces a new policy based IP address assignment feature. Policy based assignment (PBA) allows an administrator to group DHCP clients by specific attributes based on fields contained in the DHCP client request packet. This feature allows for targeted administration and greater control of configuration parameters delivered to network devices.
