Visual Studio 2008/.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1

In addition to working for Microsoft as an Architect Evangelist and running the local chapter of the International Association of Software Architects I am also one of the founders and current leaders of the New York City .NET Developers Group.   Last night we arranged for a special user group meeting to be streamed live to the Internet, and recorded for later posting on Channel 9.

Shanku Niyogi, Microsoft Product Unit Manager for the .NET Framework presented on the subject of Visual Studio 2008/.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. This service pack will be released soon. In truth this is a lot more than a typical Service Pack since it rolls up and includes a lot of new features that were previously released in Futures Releases, Community Technical Previews and Betas.

Shanku is Product Unit Manager for the .NET Framework at Microsoft. He is a direct report of Scott Guthrie, Corporate Vice President, .NET Developer Division.

Key topics covered included improvements for building Web 2.0 applications, specifically focusing on ASP.NET Dynamic Data, additions to ASP.NET AJAX (which now provides support for managing browser history) and ADO.NET Data Services. Also discussed was the The Entity Framework/Entity Data Model and improvements to WPF.

The recording and screencasting was done professionally by Chuck Boyce who is in the digital media business locally. Chuck is also a Microsoft Digital Media MVP.

It was streamed live via DotNetDVD.com. This is a site that Chuck has just created for this purpose and also to sell recorded DVD versions of other presentations by community influentials. You should check it out.

We were motivated to stream it because we could not get a large enough room at Microsoft in New York so we had to limit attendance to 100. This proved the old adage that “a problem is just an opportunity in disguise”. J

As soon as it is posted on Channel 9 I will let you all know.

Bill

To the question of when it will be released, this  is not an official answer :-) But I would assume days to a short number of weeks.  As you will see when I post the video (probably over the weekend) we are getting pretty close now.Bill

To support the above opinion: It has been pointed out elsewhere that the SP1 version of the .NET Framework is in the SQL Server 2008 release, which came out yesterday in MSDN.  So that  leaves just the Visual Studio tools to release. :-)Bill
