Mailbox lock contention in Exchange 2013

We're seeing some cases where contention for the mailbox lock causes errors on Exchange 2013. In a post over on my new blog, I describe how to identify this situation: https://bill-long.com/2014/02/07/mailbox-lock-contention-in-exchange-2013/

Seeing this too...but can't trace down the issue. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to track these down without opening a support case. One thing you can look for is third-party applications that could be tying up the mailbox with expensive searches. I seem to be seeing a lot of those lately.

Thanks for the reply, Bill. I have a case open with MS, and they are stumped too. Recommended running a repair with New-MailboxRepairRequest -Mailbox kdc -CorruptionType ProvisionedFolder, SearchFolder, AggregateCounts, Folderview which succeeded on two Corruption Types but failed on the other two. Used MFCMAPI to find and remove old hidden rules. Then they said just migrate the mailbox to another database, which I'm doing now, and see if that clears it up. Failing that, they are escalating again. When this happens, both OWA and Outlook lock up, from any desktop, using any version, either cached or online. No errors in Exchange. Final plan might be try and dump the whole thing to PST and then create a new mailbox for the user and re-inject what I can. I'll let you know what fixes it, but suffice to say, MS doesn't know and is relying on various automated methods built in to Exchange to fix the mailbox.

Please email the case number to bilong at microsoft.com. Once I receive the case number, I'll ping the engineer to give him some tips on how to track this down.
