Podcast: LightSwitch, a Hidden Gem in Visual Studio
Last week we released the Office Developer Tools for Visual Studio 2013 – March 2014 Update! We released some exciting features for Cloud Business Apps and LightSwitch projects as well as apps for Office and SharePoint. Right before the release I recorded a podcast with Dag König, a technical evangelist in Sweden. Dag is doing some great work with LightSwitch for an orphanage organization in the Baltics and approached me for a chat. I couldn’t resist.
In this podcast we chat about LightSwitch and how it works as well as some of the new features in the latest release. Check it out:

The Lightswitch HTML environment is a great tool but just seems to be missing the last bits of work to make it a truly useful dev tool. Why can you not inherit screens, why isn't there a greater variety of Javascript controls available. Why do you have to debug through this stupid untyped client side language (Javascript) which leads to so many coding errors when Microsoft have something as good as Typescript available? Why don't the old silverlight style calculated fields work? Why can't there be better tools for security and authentication without writing code in every screen. Why isn't there a decent tiered menu or home screen capability? I love the update, I like the tool but I'd like to see some more updates to make it great. The gem still needs some more polish.Anonymous

@Charles - I agree with you on a lot of these! I will pass this along to the team, thanks. Also if you want the team to consider features for the next release, you can add your suggestions on UserVoice. The more details you can give the better. It really helps to have customer requests like this in front of us when planning. visualstudio.uservoice.com/.../121579-visual-studioAnonymous

Hi Beth, I agree that Lightswitch is a Gem, the more I use it the more I discover the amazing potential it has. I'm not a professional programmer, I'm a CPA who happened to learn some .Net. Lightswith has done tremendous impact in our business. However, we desperately need a sound reporting tool. Can you please let me know if you guys a working on something? I will greatly appreciate you insights on this.Anonymous

Beth, We used this hidden gem to launch a new platform for our startup. I think we have a nice case study to showcase the speed and efficacy of this gem to reduce the time to market. Glad to do a post, if it will help revitalize interest in this gem.
