LightSwitch Community & Content Rollup– July 2013
A while back I started posting a monthly rollup of interesting community happenings, content, samples and extensions popping up around Visual Studio LightSwitch . If you missed those rollups you can check them all out here: LightSwitch Community & Content Rollups .
This month some exciting extensions were released and the team continued educating the community on all the new LightSwitch features in Visual Studio 2013 Preview – the team blog is on fire! The preview was released back in June and we’ve seen a lot of great feedback so far. Read all about what’s new for LightSwitch and please keep giving us feedback by visiting our forum for discussions, and reporting bugs on Connect.
We also have a couple important updates for you… read on.
VS2012 Update 4 RC1 & Azure 2.1 SDK for VS2013 Preview Released
A couple important releases were made available that impact LightSwitch developers. If you are experiencing the localization bug in VS2012 Update 3 that was reported, we recommend installing VS2012 Update 4 RC 1 for the fix. The RC has a “go-live” license so it is supported in production environments. Thanks to all of you that reported this bug.
The Azure 2.1 SDK was also released which has support for Visual Studio 2013 Preview. This SDK is required for LightSwitch publishing to Azure in VS2013 Preview. Open up the LightSwitch publishing wizard and it will walk you through installing the SDK using Web Platform Installer.
ComponentOne Studio for LightSwitch HTML Client Released
The long awaited HTML client extensions from ComponentOne are here. We rely on third parties like ComponentOne to fill the gaps in our controls and screen templates so you can build some truly amazing custom business apps -- and they have delivered!
From their press release: “...users will find a wide range of controls from grids and charts to gauges and even an events calendar.”
Check out their Studio for LightSwitch HTML website for more information and live demos!

Hello Beth Massi I’m posting this again because I wasn’t logged in. I'm not a professional developer, just a developer who likes to put in a program his ideas about the organization of a business. That's my specialty. Enterprise data management and support to management decisions. I did it to myself in several businesses and I am doing it to the others. LightSwitch is really a very good tool. Thank you for your good work. But…! As everything which is beautiful it has something which is not so beautiful. And here is what I am asking your help for. And I think I won’t be the only one with the same problems. Every business has its rules and logic, which may be respected by the computer operators, in order to have no data inconsistency. There, LightSwitch is a problem, because it doesn’t allow us to use it in data management in order to obtain those rules, i.e., a normal developer quickly gets into several steps of incapacity. What is beautiful and easy becomes the most complex and difficult. This is the way that I have got to a point where all my screens and DB where created and correct but I had to stop because I am not able to go further. My RIA services don´t work! I don’t yet understand in what LightSwitch 2013 turns our life , the non pro developers, easier. And I am stopped. But I didn’t gave up. Please, try to put yourself in the position of a non pro developer, who certainly has difficulties to get the developing level you describe in your posts, and think of LighSwitch as a tool who was developed to allow those developers to put in a program what they know better, the analysis of an enterprise or business system. And assuming that position try to make some videos as those you already did which I found really amazing and understandable, or try to put that kind of exposition in your posts. Just think you are teaching a beginner, cause in this moment It’s what I am when facing your complex posts, a beginner that needs to be teach like that.Anonymous

Hi Joao_Silva, Thanks for your feedback! I do understand where you are coming from and we do strive to make LightSwitch an approachable tool for developers of all skill levels. That said, it is a developer tool so you will need to write custom business rule code at some point. If you need help writing code, our forum is a great place to start: social.msdn.microsoft.com/.../home We have added more pro developer features in our last couple versions based on the overwhelming feedback we heard from them to support their scenarios -- so that's where we are today. Thank you for reminding me that I need to also focus content on the basics -- I will add some videos to my list to produce for the VS2013 when it releases. If you have any recommendations on topics please let me know. Cheers, -Beth
