Hi JB, This tool itself supports sql 2008 x64 version. Thanks.Anonymous

BCM does not appear to support deployment to a remote named instance of SQL Server. Actually, to be more specific, this tool will create the database fine within a SQL instance, but the client can't seem to find the shared remote BCM database. Based on a network trace, the Manage Databases BCM wizard in the Outlook client appears to only connect and enumerate databases in the default SQL instance on the server (it also appears to do this in a totally bizarre way).Anonymous

I am trying to install the BCM database on a SBS 2008 with sql 2008 r2 expressx 64 and get the " database name error" . will this run with sql2008 x64? will this database be accessible remote to outlook 2010 using outlook anywhere (http/rpc) or any other transparent system (non-VPN)?Anonymous

Hi, We have an SBS 2008 that I have installed the BCM 2010 tool on successfully, I have then created a database and shared it with users, this seemed to work fine. Then on the Win 7 Client machines running Office 2010 with BCM 2010 I can input the SERVERNAME/SQLEXPRESS,-1 as given in the text file results of the BCM 2010 tool but only to get the error message that the Server is found but there are no BCM databases on it? I tested with the server firewall switched off but I don’t know how to find the problem, the instruction given by the BCM 2010 tool are very limited and as it’s so new there aren’t many posts anywhere. Anyone know what I’m missing? Cheers RichAnonymous

Can't get the BCM to install. windows 7, 64 bit, Office 2010 Pro Plus. after restart and booting up the system error of BCMSetup.en-us spawncmd.js No application is associated with file for the operation. What is the problem? I deleted the SQL 5 and reinstalled the BCM, but still no good same error. RubinAnonymous

It seems as if the functionality to customize forms is lost when using the BCM Tool. The server is the owner, so none of the outlook clients and edit or create forms. Is there a fix for this?Anonymous
June 10, 2010
Ron, The customizer needs to be the DB admin or DB owner. If you give database ownership or the SQL admin permission to your users (through SQL), your users can then do customization. Hope that helps, John [msft]Anonymous

The database tool will not install on Windows 7 x64. Upon running, it installs .NET SDK 1.1! What? Then nothing happens. There are no errors or anything--the installer just quits. I need to install this on my existing SQL 2008 so that multiple users can use the database. Please help... Thanks.Anonymous

Can anyone speak to the performance (speed) of BCM 2010? Our experience with past versions was it was slow. Specifically, when clicking on History it would take 50 secconds and longer to get the history.Anonymous

Tool doesn't work for some things. We were able to setup our database on a SQL Server 2008 machine and connect to it over VPN from a single Outlook profile. But, we can't share it with other profiles. When we use the BCM tool to Share the database, we receive an error that "Cannot find the database names for the selected SQL Server instance. Please make sure the database service is running." We setup the database using the default mssmlbiz name and the port is correct and everything. No idea what's up with this..Anonymous

c.lastres as long as you do not allow it to make a copy of the remote database you can uninstall sql locally. alan wong. rich and mark. you must indicate the location of the remote database in the proper format dbservernamedatabaseinstance ie. bcmserverbcmdatabase i noticed someone using the forward slash... this wont work.Anonymous

Seems that my last post didn't, well, post. Again ... I have a volume license for Office 2010 STD, with BCM 2010. I downloaded both and installed them. So far, so good. Then, I went to access my local copy of our server's BCM and was told that, since it was created by an earlier version of BCM (duh!) I would need to use the BCM database tool. That's all fine and well, but the database tools did not install and the download linked to in the first post downloaded what was ostensibly the tools, file named for the tools, but upon double-click to install, it installed that file but that file happens to have been Bing Maps 3D -- go figure! Now, I'm trying to figure out how MS managed to mix this up. I really need this tool but can't seem to find a proper copy of it. Does anyone have a clue?Anonymous

I too am having the same problems as Rich, Mark and Alan. We have a Windows XP 32Bit virtual machine setup as our BCM db server but we cannot connect to the database from any other computers as it tells us it cannot find any databases on the computer. We actually have the same VM working with BCM 2007. We have tried using SQL Express 2005 as well as SQL Express 2008 R2 with the same results. The install of the SQL servers went without a hitch and it created the default instance 'SQLEXPRESS' We then installed the BCM 2010 Tool and created the db and then shared it while adding a user with a temp password. At the first attempt of trying to connect to the db, a message will appear telling us that the user must login with the same credentials that is used on their local machine. It then lets us change the password on the BCM server. After this, point we get the message saying it could not find a database on the bcm server PC. All subsequent attempts take us straight to this error message. I cannot find any sort of detailed documentation or even a simple document regarding the BCM DB Admin tool. I also wanted to post this problem on the BCM Support Forum but that site has been down for weeks and even when it was up, very very few posts even got a single answer back from Microsoft. Is Business Contact Manager actually supported by Microsoft? Seriously. If so, where does someone actually go for help?Anonymous

I have tried numerous times to convert a BCM database created in 2007 into 2010 using the BCM for Outlook 2010 Database Tool. It appears to be processing fine and at the end I receive an error message saying the conversion did not complete properly. I do not believe the file is corrupted, but it is large, over 400,000 KB. Is this error common and what can i do to convert the data so I run my small business on the new platform?Anonymous

Hi guys, I'm trying to install the database tool in French to be able to share French BCM DB but I'm not able to do it. each time I launch the installer BCM2010-ServerWizard-x86-fr-FR.exe, I get an error "failed to install package". The installation works fine with the BCM2010-ServerWizard-x86-en-US.exe but then I'm not able to open the created and shared databases with my french outlook. I haven't found any reference at this issue in the web, that's why I publish here. Do you have any idea ? or any web site I can consult to get more details on that? CheersAnonymous

We are running sbs 2008, which uses SQL express 2005 for SBS monitoring etc. I have successfully installed BCM 2010 onto a client workstation running Windows 7 Professional. However, like many posted here, when i use the DB admin tool to connect to a remote database - it says that the database cannot be found (even though i can plainly see it). Through reading other blogs, im told that its because BCM 2010 needs an instance called MSSMLBIZ for BCM to work - this instance IS on the windows 7 client workstation, but not on the SBS server - ive used MSMONITORING instance to run it. Question is, how to i add an instance onto SBS 2008 so that i can put in MSSMLBIZ without affecting the current SQL databases on SBS 2008 that look after my backup and monitoring? Additionally, does BCM 2010 require SQL 2008? If so, will that hinder the SQL express 2005 software already on my server. BCM does seem a good product, but to be honest will all this hassle im not sure its actually worth it.Anonymous

I had the same issue as Jean (2 posts above). So to test, I tried to use the German Package and it works perfectly. So I guess there is a specific issue on the French package. We need to wait for an update from MS. In my case, I tried to install the database tool in a Win Server 2008 R2 which is using SQL Server 2008 R2. My computers clients are in Windows 7 but I haven't any issue with BCM product on client computer. HTHAnonymous

Hi there, I would like to know, how to defrag a remote BCM-Database. I migrated our old bcm-20007-db towards 2010-db using the database-tool. Database is running on a server without Office/Outlook-Client installed. i also tried starting outlook with the user-credentials used for bcm-database-ownership on the client side. But there is still no posibility to defrag the database. The Button just stays grey and unklickable. Thanks in advanceAnonymous

For those of you having trouble connecting to the remote instance, i'd recommend reading through the following article. support.microsoft.com/.../953745 In my case, it was the SQL Listening port that wasn't configured (at all). Check the port that the Business Contact Manager instance is listening on Verify which port the instance of SQL Server is listening on and whether it is enabled. To do this, follow these steps on the Business Contact Manager server: Open SQL Server Configuration Manager. Expand SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration, and then click Protocols for MSSMLBIZ. Double-Click TCP/IP. On the Protocol tab, verify that Enabled is set to Yes. Click the IP Addresses tab, and then verify that IP ALL is configured for TCP port 5356. If the port is set to a value except for 5356, you can either change the port to 5356, or choose to keep the one that is currently set. If you have to use a port except for 5356 in order to avoid a conflict with another program that uses this port, follow the steps in the section "Use a non-standard port or instance name" If it is necessary, change the port to 5356 and stop and restart the Business Contact Manager instance as prompted.Anonymous

Hi Guys, I have been trying to upgrade BCM for days. Its the Migration which is the issue. Its from 2007 to 2010. It just fails to migrate. (migration unsucessful). I have tried this from the server and from the client and both dont work. I took a copy of the log below. The error pointed me towards SQL so i increased the file size and choose unrestricted growth but it still fails....HELP! insufficient disk space in filegroup 'PRIMARY'. Create the necessary space by dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. Could not create constraint. I guess it is worth sharing my own experience. As most of you here, installation went smoothly but I could not connect to BCM. Using sqlcmd was a must to troubelshoot. Beware of syntax. It is sqlcmd -e -SserverNamebcminstanceName,port Port for BCM is 5356. Then I doscovered that even on the local server I could not connect to the instance. Then I opened Sql Server Configuration manager, went to SQL Server Network Configuration/Protococols for my BCM Instance name. Went to TCP/IP (make sure it is enabled) then went to IP Addresses, make sure then IP All TCP Poirt is set to 5356 (it is not by by defauklt). Close, restart service. Bingo! Installation details :
- server : SQL server 2008 express r2, english, x64
- BCM server x86, french

I used the database tool to create a SQL Server database instance on SQL Server 2008 SP2 - and have added the users. I can connect users to the instance - a problem with re-importing the local databases back into the remote database has been encountered. The name of the contact is missing - it appears that all fields are shift by one field, as the Title information is found in the name field, etc. Hoping that there is some guidance on this issue. Is there a different schema in the database tool vs the BCM 2010 software itself. Your help is greatly anticipated. Thanks!Anonymous

Not sure where else to ask this question is is so esoteric at this time: I want to upgrade to Office / BCM 2010. I am running BCM 2007 fine on SBS 2008 / SQL 2008 (running on the second server permitted by SBS 2008 Premium). Unfortunately, I am also committed to continuing to run Accounting Professional 2009 which is no longer supported by MS. My question is: Can I run BCM 2010 AND continue to use Accounting Professional 2009 as SEPARATE apps/databases. I fully understand that if I go with BCM 2010 that I can no longer integrate BCM data with Accounting 2009 data. Can the two apps / databases co-exist on one server?Anonymous

I have a question and I’m not sure where to ask it, but here goes. We have Outlook 2007 and plan to start using BCM. We are concerned about the 4GB limit for Sql Express 2005, the free version that came with BCM. How many contacts should we expect to put in our database before having to worry about the size limit? Our contacts would contain the usually items, name, company, e-mail address, address, phone numbers, some custom fields and be associated with some accounts. We have only found a few people that posted on the internet how large their database was in relation to the amount of contacts they have. Thank you, PatrickAnonymous

I have been using BCM for Outlook 2010 (32-bit) on my standalone Windows 7 PC. Because my automatic backup has been backing up my entire user folder, including AppData, I assumed that my BCM data was being backed up. Until my hard drive crashed. I've been rebuilding my system and looking around for answers. Is there any way I can use this Database Tool (or anything else, for that matter), to bring my data back in to my new installation of BCM, when I haven't specifically been exporting to a backup file?
