Announcing Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2013 Database Tool!

We’re pleased to announce that the Business Contact Manager Database Tool, also known as the DB Admin Tool, will ship in the next few weeks.

This tool allows administrators to host Business Contact Manager for Outlook databases on a computer on which Microsoft Office 2013 and Business Contact Manager for Outlook are not installed. Once installed on a server, this tool will allow users to:

  • Create and back up Business Contact Manager for Outlook databases.
  • Restore databases from Business Contact Manager for Outlook.
  • Share Business Contact Manager databases with other users on a local network.
  • Migrate databases from Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010 and Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2007.

When the Database Tool is posted, we’ll update this blog.

Thank you,

The Microsoft Dynamics CRM Team

So if i use this tool to update the 2010 database on my server, will it still be compatible with outlook 2010? will installing the recent BCM update on my client computers, update the database on the server? Is this just a compatibly update, or are there any features updated? I look forward to your answers. Thank you.

@Isaac, I don't speak for Microsoft, but I think you'll find that you won't be able to share 2010 and 2013 clients on the database. Once you update a database to 2013 it will only accept 2013 clients. This is the same as the 2007 to 2010 upgrade. Equally this appears to be just a compatability update. No new features have been added to the Client, its just a recompile to work with 2013. I assume that the same is true of the database admin tool. Stuart Burningsuit

@StuartB  Yep, that sounds about right from what I understand.  The good news is that 2013 users can still use BCM and migrate their data across easily enough.

@stuartb, Thanks. I was hoping it would fix somethings, I have 6 people connecting to a central server, and its destroying it currently. 70% cpu usage and above all the time. Just started using it, and im not liking that part of it.

I recently purchased Office Home & Business 2013. Where can I download the corresponding BCM as I have never used it before?

@Isaac Sorry to hear that.  One other thing to note is that migration should keep a backup of your 2010 DB around (if it's shared, it will stay shared), so you could run both DB's while you get everyone upgraded to Office 2013, and then export/import any new 2010 data to the 2013 DB.  Not sure if that applies to your situation or not though. With the perf, one other thing you could try is having some of your staff use BCM in Offline mode if/when they only need light access to the data, and then go back online at the end of the day.  It might also be related to the amount of data in your DB - you could back up the DB and then clean out any data which isn't that relevant anymore.

Posted it on the other blog and no response. So, trying here. What is the recommended way to migrate a single user Outlook 2010 BCM database from a Windows 7 system setup to Outlook 2013 on a Windows 8 system. Last time I tried, I lost all the follow up flags and don't want to have that problem again.

We have migrated the database from 2010 to 2013 and move everyone to Outlook 2013 and ran the compatibility pack or full upgrade depending on situation.  My users are getting a Yellow Bar when they go to Business Contact Manager in Outlook 2013 that says " This database is not compatible with Business Contact Manager for Outlook 2010".  Help Please - This is a annoying to my users.  How do I make it go away.

Ronald, did you ever figure out how to get rid of this message? I'm getting this thing too on a database that's brand new and created by BCM in Outlook 2013. It was never used in Outook 2010 and I'm not using Outlook 2010. ARGH!

If you are thinkinng about replacing Sage with BCM in Outlook... DON'T DO IT.  I was a long time user of BCM and recently had a whole bunch of problems and a Microsoft tech person spent at least a week trying to correct the issue.  I never did get it up and running again and I had to convert my whole database to another CRM (Maximizer).  I think you'll find that Microsoft eventually dumps BCM and you 'll have to do it all over again.  I've left BCM for good because it has been very obvious to me that Microsoft isn't really interested in keeping BCM going for the long term.

Thanks Carey.  Although I posted my question here in a BCM area, I am really hoping that there is a solution on very thorough Act! migration with just plain vanilla Outlook 2013... no BCM.  But maybe I am wishing for too much. I tried to migrate with BCM 2007 and it didn't work.

Hi, I have been looking all over for an answer. Is there anyway to get the data from BCM out? I need the opportunities and histories. How can I get into the data? Thanks,

I just upgraded to Outlook 2016.  Is there a Business Contact Manager version compatible with Outlook 2016 and runs under Windows 10?
