Microsoft Deployment Toolkit 2013 Update 2 Now Available

Over on the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit Team Blog Aaron Czechowski announced the availability of MDT 2013 Update 2. For those of you deploying Windows 10 images you will definitely want to take a look at what's new. Here's what Aaron posted about the updates.

MDT 2013 Update 2 is primarily a quality release; there are no new major features. The following is a summary of the significant changes in this update:

  • Security- and cryptographic-related improvements:
    • Relaxed permissions on newly created deployment shares (still secure by default, but now also functional by default)
    • Creating deployment shares via Windows PowerShell adds same default permissions
    • Updated hash algorithm usage from SHA1 to SHA256
  • Includes the latest Configuration Manager task sequence binaries
  • Enhanced user experience for Windows 10 in-place upgrade task sequence
  • Enhanced split WIM functionality
  • Fixed OSDJoinAccount account usage in UDI scenario
  • Fixed issues with installation of Windows 10 language packs
  • Various accessibility improvements
  • Monitoring correctly displays progress for all scenarios including upgrade
  • Improvements to smsts.log verbosity
  • Fixed Orchestrator runbook functionality

    • Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2013 Update 2 is for operating system deployment leveraging the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) for Windows 10.

Feature Summary

    • MDT is the recommended process and toolset for automating desktop and server operating system deployments. MDT provides you with the following benefits:

 

      • Unified tools and processes, including a set of guidance, for deploying desktops and servers in a common deployment console.
      • Reduced deployment time and standardized desktop and server images.

Some of the key changes in MDT 2013 Update 2 are:

    • Support for the latest Windows ADK for Windows 10.
    • Improvements to deployment and upgrade of Windows 10.
    • Support for the current branch of System Center Configuration Manager (currently version 1511).

    • Other Software Requirements
    • The Windows ADK for Windows 10 is required for all deployment scenarios.
    • System Center Configuration Manager, version 1511 or later, is required for zero-touch installation (ZTI) and user-driven installation (UDI) scenarios.
    • If you are using ZTI and/or UDI, you are allowed to add the MDT SQL database to any version of System Center Configuration Manager with SQL Technology; if you are using LTI, you must use a separately licensed SQL Server product to host your MDT SQL database.

Install Instructions

  1. To start the download, select a file from the list of Files in this Download and then click Download.
  2. To run the .msi file from its current location, click Run.
  3. Accept the Microsoft Software License Terms.
  • Follow the steps in the installation process to complete the installation.
  • To start Deployment Workbench, look in All apps in the Start menu for Microsoft Deployment Toolkit.
  1. Or, to save the .msi file to your computer for later installation, click Save.

    But in all honesty it should be pulled - Worst Update Ever - have not had a working task sequence since it came out and MS support are nowhere to be found (except for the wonder Michael N)....

    Stay away from it like the black plague my friend!
