Deploying Surface Pro 3 Pen and OneNote Tips
Hi, my name is Scott McArthur and I am Senior Support Escalation Engineer on the Deployment/Devices team. In today’s blog I am going to go over some tips for deploying Surface Pro 3 related to the Pen and OneNote integration.
Note: The Surface Pro 3 Pen functionality requires OneNote 2013 or Modern OneNote. It does not work with OneNote 2010.
Tip #1: Deploying custom image to Surface Pro 3
You may have noticed that if you deploy a custom image to Surface Pro 3 the Pen button does not bring up modern OneNote. The image that ships with Surface Pro 3 contains additional update that adds this functionality. If you are deploying a custom image you will need to incorporate that update into your deployment or reference image.
KB2968599: Quick Note-Taking Experience Feature for Windows 8.1
At this time we are working on making this update easier to download but in the meantime you can download it from the following direct link:
Update 10/3/2014:
There is a new additional update that you should install or include in your image related to OneNote and Note-Taking
August 2014 update for Quick Note-Taking Experience feature in Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2978002
Tip #2: Setting default OneNote for the Pen
If you use the Desktop version of OneNote 2013 you may want it to be the default application when the Pen button is pressed. To change the default OneNote application you can set this in OneNote 2013 using following steps
1. Click File, Options
2. Choose Advanced
3. Under Default OneNote Application
NOTE: If you do not have this option in OneNote 2013 make sure you have the following update for OneNote installed:
KB2881082: July 8, 2014 update for OneNote 2013
Tip #3: Double click functionality for screenshots
One of the other nice features is the ability to double click the pen button to send a screenshot to OneNote.
Magic Tricks with OneNote and Surface Pro 3
https://blogs.office.com/2014/06/18/magic-tricks-with-onenote-and-surface-pro-3
In order to support this functionality, the Modern OneNote app must be the latest version available from the store. So, if this functionality does not work, make sure Modern OneNote app has been updated.
If you configure the Desktop OneNote as the default OneNote application, it should work by default with the double-click feature.
Tip #4: Adding Pen pairing to a deployment
During the 1st bootup of the OEM image that ships with the Surface Pro 3, you are prompted during OOBE to pair the pen. If you are deploying a custom image and want to add this setup screen to your deployment (to be completed by technician or user), you can use the following steps:
Requirements:
- System with the Windows ADK installed
- Install.wim are you are deploying
- Another Surface Pro 3 system that has the OEM system image that ships from Microsoft
1. Take one of your existing Surface Pro 3 devices that has the OEM image on it and copy the following files to USB flash drive or other location:
%windir%\system32\oobe\info\default\1033\oobe.xml
%windir%\system32\oobe\info\default\1033\PenPairing_en-US.png
%windir%\system32\oobe\info\default\1033\PenError_en-US.png
%windir%\system32\oobe\info\default\1033\PenSuccess_en-US.png
2. Open Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment cmd prompt
3. Use the DISM command to mount the image you are deploying
Dism /mount-wim /wimfile:c:\install.wim /index:1 /mountdir:c:\mount
4. Create the following folder structure in the image
C:\mount\windows\system32\oobe\info\default\1033
5. Copy all the files from Step #1 above into this folder
6. Close any explorer Windows and switch to C:\ to make sure no open file handles to the c:\mount folder
7. Unmount the image and save changes
Dism /unmount-wim /mountdir:c:\mount /commit

@happysccm. I checked with product group and they said that there is no way to bring up that BT pairing via script. The user must initiate the BT pairing. Apparently this is due to security related issues - Anonymous

Hi Scott,
Great article! Thanks for sharing. It is great seeing more posts like this.
It would be great to see information (or a brief summary) of the update included the support KB article page:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2881082
Yes, we can verify the patch installed and file versions are present but without context of what was changed from a GUI or OneNote functionality perspective it is hard to confirm that the update is in place by end users.
Thanks,

I am working in a large enviroment where we have a very "standardized custom image". I am wondering if it is possible to actually restore the pen OOBE experience without adding this to the actual image.. Like through the task-sequence instead.. - Anonymous

Hello Scott,
First I like to Thanks billion times, very beautiful article.
I have One question for you. what if OneNote 2013 is installed on Microsoft App-V environment, and users access it on their surface pro 3. In this scenario will pen work to open OneNote 2013 or is it work only for locally installed OneNote 2013 and morden App.
Thanks in advance

Hi Scott,
Is there anyway to do that OOBE function on command? Having it in a task sequence is no good as you have to wait for it and the task sequence only continues once done. Control panel/bluetooth isn't really friendly. - Anonymous

Is there a way of sending Double click screenshots to the same page? Clipping from a long research paper is great, but merging 20 or so pages of small clippings afterwards is cumbersome. - Anonymous

Hi Scott, great blog!
I'm still having nightmares with this deployment.
I'm using Office 2013 SP1 (x86) and have added KB2881082 into the deployment phase of Office. I have also tried adding KB2968599 as a package which installs, but the pen click option still doesnt work - needless to say the pen has been paired to the Surface and OneNote 2013 is setup and is set to default.. We will not be using the Modern UI version of OneNote.
Ive also tried deploying without the KB2968599, instead installing it post deployment, but that then says"the update is not applicable to your computer".
I'm slowly going mad... any pointers?
Cheers,

I am unable to find a download for the msu file for the "August 2014 update for Quick Note-Taking Experience feature in Windows RT 8.1 and Windows 8.1" from URLhttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/2978002. I have checked the Microsoft Update Catalog as well with no luck. Any chance we can get an actual link to the download location?
Thanks! - Anonymous

@Steve Hazlett - to get an MSU version of KB2978002, go to the Surface Pro 3 drivers download page. Click download and then in that list there will be a .ZIP for the KB you need. - Anonymous

@Scott McArthur,
To echo what @HappySCCM is asking above. Is there a script or command to set OneNote (Desktop) as the default. I have removed the OneNote ModernUI app from my reference image and now we have to manually configure OneNote (Desktop) to be the default. To have this functionality would make deployments a bit easier. - Anonymous

Ok after hours and hours of troubleshooting, if you need to install the update for onenote kb2968599 you will need to first install KB2919355. This is if you get the error that it is not applicable to your computer. Even after contacting Microsoft, they were unable to tell me that this update is a pre requisite. Maybe they can update the KB article to state this. - Anonymous

I can not get this to work after deploying the image! The 4 files have been added to the image being deployed but nothing to do with pen pairing appears.
Is there something that needs to be added within unattend.xml for this to happen? - Anonymous
