Women in Technology… Are YOU One? Or do you KNOW one?

So as a “woman in technology” (a.k.a. WiT), I have definitely spent a good many years struggling to be taken seriously in a career where women are a rarity.  I am also a gamer (RPG and table-top, not computer), a sci-fi fan, and generally a pretty big geek.  As you can imagine, the level of acceptance is very different in those two communities, and I wish it weren’t.  I definitely don’t have any answers to this issue, but our WiT group is working hard on trying to figure it out with the help of the community.

So when I was recently given the opportunity to get involved in the Women in Technology group that was started at Microsoft, I took it.  I attended the SeriousPlay event hosted by Lego and WomenBuild at the MDC in January, and was amazed to see how successful that event was, and that it included both men and women (yeah, really!).  Maybe one or more of you were there too.  Recently, I was able to organize several WiT networking sessions at the QAI Quest conference, and met some incredible women from many different industries, roles, and walks of life. It opened my eyes to a lot of “opportunities for improvement” that we have when it comes to how we connect with, educate, and serve as examples for others.  Whether they are women already in technology related fields, women who want to get into a technical career, or a young woman with aspirations of joining our ranks.

I’m not planning on using my blog as a soap box or to launch angry tirades against my readers with Y chromosomes, but I will definitely be blogging more about this topic in the future, and will be looking for help (by both my male and female readers) from anyone that wants to get involved.  Please send me a message if you want to be in the loop on upcoming events we are involved with, or if you have ideas or suggestions for us.
