Using OPML 101 - Screencast
As you might have noticed, I'm getting all excited about OPML, so I've created this OPML 101 screencast (Flash movie).
The screencast is meant to be an introduction to OPML (what it is) and then goes into a number of different uses and applications (what it can do - not exhaustive by any means), but hopefully something there for you too if you are already familiar with OPML.
Plenty of references to RSS, so if you don't know what RSS is then see this RSS 101 screencast.
Resources I reference in the OPML 101 screencast include the following:
- opmlmanager.com, my OPML outliner, and my OPML file
- FeedDemon
- Taskable
- Dave Winer's OPML Community Directory and OMPL site, and the Seattle Mind Camp OPML file I created that Dave uses to render out his Seattle Mind Camp Roll.
Hope you find this useful. Happy OPMLing!

Thanks to Raymond for his suggestion of me doing this, Mark for his hosting facilities and Techsmith for making the cool screencasting software (Camtasia Studio 3).

Thanks very much for that Alex, I've been trying for a while to explain the benefits of OPML to my blog readers with a view to bootstrapping a distributed directory. Your screencast will convey the message better than I ever could with words. - Anonymous

I agree this screencast really conveys the power of OPML. I really was able to grok OPML when I started maintaining the Disney podcasts node on Indiepodder.org directory. - Anonymous

Thank you Very much for making it, Alex! How long did it take? An hour in total? :)
Thing is: If someone spends an hour making a good screencast, it can save others tens of hours. This could be for simple things (FAQ for Word), or for more complex issues.
I have been So frustrated with OPML lately, but thanks to this I have the gutso to go further, and can actually start Using this, and in return I can screencast this in my own version in Norwegian so that my blog readers (and others) can start getting it...
Once again, thank you. This is very valuable. - Anonymous

Doesn't work for me in Firefox or IE. Player appears but nothing happens when I press play, etc. - Anonymous

Raymond: I had to make a few takes and stich them together so took a bit longer than that. Glad you liked it though :-)
Martin, I don't know what the problem is you are describing: it seems to have worked fine since it went live, for both IE and Firefox user. Sorry :-( - Anonymous

Great job on the screen cast - wonderful resource. Check out the OPML Search engine at www.opmlsearch.com - it exclusively searches OPML files. I'd love to know if you find it useful - suggestions welcome. - Anonymous
