More news on holographic storage

Forget the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD battle. Think H-ROM. At CES, InPhase gave more hints on this technology in collaboration with Hitachi Maxell Ltd:

InPhase will be the first company to deliver a holographic product for professional archive applications in late 2006. The media for this product will be offered through its strategic partner Hitachi Maxell Ltd. The initial InPhase Tapestry holographic recording device will record 300 gigabytes (GB) of data onto a 130 mm disc with a transfer rate of 20 megabytes per second (MB/s). This is compatible with high-definition television transmission rates, and high-end enterprise computer applications.

  Well, I am not related to InPhase Technologies in any way, but note that InPhase started shipping both holographic media starting from september last year (http://www.inphase-technologies.com/products/tapestrymedia/index.html) and also test equipment (Holographic Drive Development System - http://www.inphase-technologies.com/products/testequip/index.html) so you can develop your own devices.
  
  Now, we will see whether holographic storage will be cost effective - that's a differnent question. But, still, I wouldn't qualify it as a hoax...

  Believe me, no-one would be happier than me if holographic storage pans out - like I said, its one of those technologies that's always breaking my heart when it doesn't make it to the big show...
