Configuring Port Ranges for Quality of Service (QoS)

Topic Last Modified: 2012-08-31

When you have decided on the port ranges for each communication type, you can configure these port ranges on each affected server that is running Microsoft Lync Server 2010.

To configure server port ranges

  1. Log on to the server as a member of the Administrators group.

  2. Start the Lync Server Management Shell: Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Lync Server 2010, and then click Lync Server Management Shell.

  3. Get the current port ranges: In the Lync Server Management Shell, type one of the following, as appropriate, and then press Enter:

    • For a Front End Server or a stand-alone A/V Conferencing Server:

      Get-CsService -ConferencingServer

    • For a Mediation Server:

      Get-CsService -MediationServer

The cmdlet returns information about the server type specified, including the Identity for the server. Use the value for the Identity as the value of the Identity parameter in the following step.

  4. Change the port range settings as necessary: At a command prompt, type one of the following, as appropriate, including only the parameters that you want to change, and then press Enter:

    • For Conferencing Servers collocated on Front End Server or a stand-alone A/V Conferencing Server:

Set-CsConferenceServer -Identity <ConferencingServer:poolFQDN> -AudioPortStart <beginning of port range, 1024 or higher> -AudioPortCount <number of ports, at least 128> -VideoPortStart <beginning of port range, 1024 or higher > -VideoPortCount <number of ports, at least 128> -AppSharingPortStart <beginning of port range> -AppSharingPortCount <number of ports, at least 4>

    • For a Mediation Server:

      Set-CsMediationServer -Identity <MediationServer:poolFQDN> -AudioPortStart <beginning of port range> -AudioPortCount <number of ports>

    • For an Application Server:

      Set-CsApplicationServer -Identity <ApplicationServer:poolFQDN> -AudioPortStart <beginning of port range> -AudioPortCount <number of ports> -AppSharingPortStart <beginning of port range> -AppSharingPortCount <number of ports> -VideoPortStart <beginning of port range> -VideoPortCount <number of ports>

  5. To update these settings immediately, stop and then restart the affected services.

To edit the port ranges on an Edge Server

  1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group to the server where your Lync Server topology is published.

  2. Start the Lync Server Management Shell: Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Lync Server 2010, and then click Lync Server Management Shell.

  3. Change the port range settings as necessary: At a command prompt, type the following, and then press Enter:

Set-CsEdgeServer -Identity: <FQDN of Edge Server> -MediaCommunicationPortStart <beginning of port range, default 50000> -MediaCommunicationPortCount <number of ports, default 10000>

  4. To update these settings immediately, stop and then restart the affected services.

    Important

Edge port configuration settings are not used for QoS directly, and apply to the ports on the external edge of the Edge Server.
