Unsupported upgrade paths to Search Server 2008
The following table contains information about upgrade paths to Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express that are not supported.

Note on installation types and databases
When upgrading to or from Search Server 2008 or Search Server 2008 Express, the installation type of the upgrade must be the same as the original installation. The possible installation types are:
Basic A basic installation of Search Server or Office SharePoint Server 2007 uses the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition database.
Note
A basic installation of Windows SharePoint Services uses the Windows Internal Database. Installing Search Server or Office SharePoint Server 2007 over Windows SharePoint Services will use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for all Search Server and Office SharePoint Server 2007 databases. Existing Windows SharePoint Services databases will continue to use the Windows Internal Database. New SharePoint sites created after the upgrade can use either database instance.
Advanced An advanced installation of Search Server, Windows SharePoint Services, or Office SharePoint Server 2007 uses a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database.
In other words, Basic installations remain basic, and Advanced installations remain advanced. You cannot switch installation types during upgrade.
